Head cold/sinusitis

I have a milker with a stuffy nose. She has no fever and she's eating just fine. Her nostrils are always flared to try to get more air in, and she breathes through her mouth a lot.

I was watching her while we were all lounging and she isn't chewing her cud as much. She'll bring one up, chew it real quick then stop and pant for a while. To the point that she's drooling just because she has her mouth open that long.

That doesn't happen all the time; she breathes well, if a little loudly, while she's foraging. There's no chest congestion that I can hear. I've only listened with my ear, not a stethescope, but she sounds really clear.

I absolutely recognize the face movements and snot-sucking and stopping to breathe as what I do when I have a head cold.

I've started her on vitamin C and have given her an antihistimine. That just doesn't seem like the right thing to give her. Is it safe to give her a decongestant? Like guafenesine/phenylephrine? I just want to tuck her into bed with some Nyquil and a hot toddy.

Thanks!
April

I think that's just the RIGHT thing to do.

Perfect. I'll give her one at milking tonight. Maybe she'll get a good night's rest. Thanks, Alice!

Not the hot toddy/Nyquil......the antihistamine Though I'm sick as a dog right now & would love the hot toddy.

One thing, watch her closely!

My Alpine/Oberhasli kid had the same thing for an entire week.....gave antihistamine, vitamin C & kept an eye on her.

Then one day out of the blue, snot, rattling in the chest, fever......Almost 2 days later my two lamanchas got it too!!

Came on freakishly fast & one of my lamanchas was barely breathing by day 2.....the doeling who got it the worst NEVER ran a fever, even though the other two did run slight fevers......It was a scary week to say the least, especially since it came on so fast

Had to use Biomycin for 7 days with benadryl, banamine, vitamin C, Bo-Se & lots of TLC.

Not saying this will happen to you....My boys had the same stuff & benadryl/vitamin C patched them up in two days.

I have a doe that I give Dimetapp to this time of year for allergies too & it seems to help her. Like Crystal said though, keep a good eye on her just in case she comes down with phneumonia or something like that.
