Oil added to feed

I wish we could but we can't afford to add BOSS to their feed right now. I was wondering anyone has any luck with adding like flax seed oils (like the stuff from the vitamin store) or would that hurt them?

If you do about how much do you give everyone?

I add a tablespoon per goat per day to the feed bucket and mix it up. What kind of oil? Whatever's on hand: olive, vegetable, butter...

Makes their coats shiny, relieves dry skin, hooves less dry, adds some calories, improves general health. Same as Black Oil Sunflower Seeds.

That's a good alternative. We give oil to the dogs on occasion to help with calories/coat, hadn't thought about the goats!

I use "wheat germ oil" from the feed store that has added vitamins A,D and E. I love it for coat condition, and I do believe it improves milk flavor. I started using it because I top dress their feed with their mineral and they were grabbing the bucket lip and giving it a bounce to knock the mineral down so they could eat just the feed. So - I started spritzing with the wheat germ oil then adding mineral to cut down on that a bit. After that I started noticing the improvements.

I'm pretty sure it's the vitamin E that's helping milk flavor and the oil that's giving them healthy skin and fur. They did so well on it that I started giving it to the cow as well.

It's pricey, but I don't use that much - about three squirts from a big spray bottle.

With BOSS being so high and with my wallet being so thin, this past summer I stopped feeding BOSS and didn't replace it withy anything.
This was after the milk flush had leveled off and does were in good summer condition and weight, of course. I watched them, but everyone did fine. So I haven't fed BOSS to any of my milkers this summer, just the kids(and the bucks are getting it now that they are on their "rutt ration"). The does all milked and looked great on whole oats alone.
Of course as the does start getting pre-kidding rations again, they will be getting oats and BOSS once again. But once they are in good summer condition again next year....I think I'll do the same.
