Good-bye DeJewel's Gracie's Sweetie

3/24/2009 - 9/1/2011. We didn't have long together but our dreams were still the same. I will miss you.

This is informational: I may jump around a bit because I am still very much upset. Sweetie was fine Tuesday night. Wednesday morning @ 8 she was standing in the corner, kicking at her belly/ shifting weight from foot to foot, no interest in feed. Immediately took her temp: NORMAL. Checked membranes... fine. She had lots of good rumen noises. Pooped/peed shortly afterwards. Lungs were clear. Gave her Vit. B complex, Her rumen felt "doughy", made a bunch of calls (vet out of town). Friends came over, Began treatment on her for possible entero. Noticed by 10am she was not pooping/peeing, gave her mineral oil drench rectally & orally for possible impaction. She would get up for us and walk until about 4 am thursday morning. She would nibble at feed until 4pm Wed. Drank warm water until 6 pm Wed. Kept up with C&D antitoxin treatments, fluids both orally/rectally all through the evening/night. Called Vet & took her down by 930 am. The vets coment: "I've never seen a goat so sick that still had a working rumen." We got an IV into her, but it was quickly known it was a one way trip for her. She was gently put to sleep by 1015 am. We did a necropsy, I had to know if someone had done something wrong. If she got into something (like a plastic bag, hay twine, ANYTHING....)
She died of the goat equivalent to human appendicits. I can't remember what its exactly called. My only comfort is that I found her right away so she was never in the horrid pain that could have happened. The vet said that by the time she would've shown symptoms it wouldve been too late.

She was my first Saanen. I am in love with the breed and will try again. I hope to have one as well bred again soon, but I will never forget her.

I am soooo sorry! I have three DeJewels does in my herd (well they are my daughter's 4H goaties) and while I originally thought Saanens were the vanilla pudding of the goat world, I now love them, love them, love them! My thoughts go out to you!

I am so sorry, both for your goat friend and for you - you did everything anyone else would do for your goat.

I am so sorry for your loss! It's always hard no matter how long you have them or what they die from. It sounds like there wouldn't have been much you could have done for her with what she had.
