goat with runny poo

Please go easy on me, but for the life of me I cannot remember what to give my doe for diarrhea. She is nursing twins and it didn't start until I gave her more alfalfa pellets than she has gotten in the past. Not a horrible amount but probably 1 1/2 cups as opposed to 1cup. The next day it was clumpy but not runny and yesterday it was water. I gave her only hay last night but she did get to some green grass before I could stop her. I didn't see any in the stall today but couldn't see very well and was in a rush. I am having a brain freeze and cant remember if it is Pepto or something else. Thanks.

I looked for an old post but couldn't find one.

Yes Pepto, repeat if needed. Good call giving just hay. "some" grass, as in 1-2 hours at most should not cause issues even in a dry-lotted animal.

That is not a lot of alphalfa pellets, is that 1x or 2x a day?. Are you sure that is the cause of diarhea? High enough protein and yes diarhea can start. Again, 1 1/2 cups a day is NOT a lot.

Stalled goats always makes me think cocci. Though not usually common in adults, confined goats are much more likely to succumb to coccidiosis than pasture raised.

I'd run a fecal, check for both cocci & stomach worms, to see what's up just in case. Also check your feed & hay for mold, mold spores, moisture.

Added: Ahhh, you are in VT. Is her water source clean? After the hurricane there may be pathogens in your water...Make sure it is not contaminated.

Really good info HF. Thanks. By the time I got home last night, she was just fine and very unhappy with me for restricting her food yesterday. Her babies were none too happy either. They pick through her bowl whenever they can. Little pigletsThey don't get alfalfa pellets though, I feed them to her by hand. I do only give the alfalfa once a day. I still didn't give her any alfalfa last night and restricted her grain to about a cup(normal is 2c. + alfalfa.)

My hay is awesome. We had such hot dry weather for an extended period of time that our hay dried like nobodys business. Rare in Vermont. Good thought though.

I was concerned about worming her while still nursing. Probably not an issue, but I am kinda neurotic about that. I have Sulmet pour on that my friend says to use orally, about 5cc per goat(hidden in bread and molasses). I also have a pelleted wormer. Not sure which to use.

Praise God, my little piece of Heaven was not hit very bad at all. No flooding at my place just at the lower end of my road. I am fairly high up. And my buckets get cleaned if not everyday, then every couple of days. They are so picky about anything in their water.
" Beware of the two pieces of hay floating on the water!!!"

How old are the twins? Did you worm her when she kidded? If not I would definately worm her using Cydectin or Quest if you have them. The pelleted goat wormers will not work. It will not bother her kids.

Also I would give her about 2 Tablespoonfuls of pepto & again if need & would only feed her hay & alfafa pellets, no grain till the runny poo stops.
