goat labor signs? what are they?

I have a pretty nigerian girl who is due to kid today it is her second birth but my first experience with kidding. We moved her into her birthing pen a few days ago she has been nibbling on food but not eating hay with gusto like usual (she like browse if I bring it to her) she has barely touched her alfalfa. Her breathing has been labored for the same amount of time (a few days) but she is not gasping or wheezing, the breathing is just more noticable than usual. She no longer urinates standing up, she squats (like a female dog does) her udders have grown (and they are sooo pretty) I just went outside and her vulva had a string of mucus hanging from it. All pretty good signs right? How can you tell that labor is officially underway? What signs do you see? How long does it take? I dont want to miss it these will be my first offspring at my place which makes it extra special, so I am checking every couple of hours. Im feeling a little breathless. I wonder if this is what my husband felt like when I was giving birth to our children... or at least similar...

well, if she was in labor you have kids now. the mucus is promising - it means "any day now" arching with contractions is a good sign. a bubble or baby goat part sticking out the back is a definite sign of labor. Once the first contractions start, the whole thing should take from a couple of hours to 10 minutes - depends on how badly you need to pee or sleep. If you absolutely have to leave the barn - ten minutes.

welcome to goats.

I bet you alreay have kids?? Signs are bloody mucous string (kidding within an hr or so) tight shiney udder. Getting up & down & pawing. Some does show all or non of this.
When she's pushing the first kid should appear within a few minutes. All kids should be on the ground in 15 or 20.
If she's not done in that time frame she needs help.
Good kidding experience to ya!

Should we tell stories of going to town for an hr & that doe finally kidded when you were gone?
Or getting up all hrs of the night and decide not to one night & sleep in?
Na...

Yay!!!! One beautiful black doeling with a little white star on the forehead mama is going ape-sh%t licking her and making the most wonderful noises just so content. Not sure shes giving me more (its been an hour since the first) she still holds afterbirth hasn't passed it yet. She also still looks very pregnant. How long between babies is normal?

congratulations!

will you now have to change your name to "NataliaThreeDoes"?

also, if you didn't see the afterbirth, but she seems fine and feels empty, don't worry - she probably ate it while you were posting.

LOL no Natalia FiveDoes I could not resist some 6 month teenage goats who I saw in May so I bought the two sisters so I actually had 4 before "Starry Night" which is what we named the new doeling after the Picasso. She is all black with a few white speckles so it fits. Thanks everyone, she did do the pawing and back arching her udders were bright pink during labor. My 8 month old son was completely fascinated, he was there for the crowning and just completely silent through the whole process. I did get pics of everything and several soundless videos will try to post them later.

Aw, that's sweet...yes, the only time my stand-offish doe ever gave me affection was right after she kidded; face-washed me and licked my ears till I was down-right embarrassed!!! Congrats!

I can't see the pics. Temporarily unavailable according to the page; can't wait to see her; black & whites are my favorite.

Van Gogh's "Starry Night" is one of my absolute favorite paintings ... I'll have to keep that name in mind come kidding time.

lol Van Gogh... I asked my hubby just to double check...."was that Picasso or Van Gogh?" well he assured me it was Picasso....now I feel slightly embarrassed. The baby looks all black in the pics you cannot see her star on the forehead and the other speckles are very faint as well. That's why I decided speckles was more appropriate description. I set the pic to "everyone" so that you all could see so its just a matter of time. FB is very glitchy.

Oh, my; I was not trying to correct you, I hadn't even noticed the Picasso (now that would be a good name, too - especially for a moon-spotted baby, hmmmmmm.

Still can't see her. <sigh>

One of my spring kids was black and white pinto doeling - my very first one. I was sooooo excited. Mine are usually a variation of buckskin or solid black with the nigie star on crown of head. I bought a black and white buckling in June with the possibility of moon spots, and the older he gets the prominent his moon spots are becoming. He is so pretty, can't wait to see what he can throw.
