Out Roaming Around

In the last week or so, we have got quite a bit of rain. I guess Mother Nature finally decided to take pity on us. Not only has it rained, but the temps have stayed in the nineties (and even a little lower a couple of days). This has caused all manner of weeds and even some *gasp* grass, to sprout and grow like crazy. So we let the goats out to roam around the yard for a while. They happily munched on young apple trees, rose bushes, various weeds, the grape vine, etc.

And of course, I got a few pics of them.

Penny, happily munching a bit of corn stalk. Sadly, the rain was too late to save the poor corn patch.

or maybe that weed over there

or maybe those leaves up there, if she could only just reach... (yes she has a precocious udder)

Oh, your Penny is gorgeous! Glad you got some rain; we did, too, and it's about time to mow again . . . .

Penny is definitely looking much better than when she arrived. So is Lil' Miss.

The rain has been very nice. I can't believe how much I missed it or how much relief I felt when it finally started falling again.

Love the pics. We, too, have had our share of rain the past week and a reprieve from the heat. Our grass is growing like crazy and I have decided that I am not going to mow again. I am going to just let it grow and then turn them out. Talking with the local farmers, they are optimistic that they could get another cutting on the hay fields. My fingers are crossed for everyone!

I think it rained a little the first couple of days of June. After that we had triple digits and no rain all the way until the first week of August. Then miraculously, the heat broke and the rain came. We haven't hit triple digits since and the rain has return several times. We are thankful every time it rains. Its been much easier on the chickens and goats.

Love the pics of your goats, especially Penny. I had a Penny once years ago, she was a Togg. She gave us loads of milk.

I wish Penny gave us loads of milk. Unfortunately she self sucks a lot of the time. So, rarely do we get to enjoy the product of her full production. It's very frustrating. Beautiful though she is, she is not a doe I am going to keep. She has nice breeding behind her and if I needed her genetics, I would keep her until she kids next year. But since Lil' Miss is Penny's daughter, I don't need Penny.

Oh, dear! Self-nursing is a problem. What remedies have you tried?

I haven't really tried anything to stop her. At first I was going to until I started researching threads by people who had similar problems. For the most part, from what I read, it seems trying to get them to stop is an exercise in frustration. Since we have Lil'Miss and Bella will be coming back to us shortly, I just don't see the point in dealing with the irritation. I have to keep a small herd, so I will only keep does that I adore and who make my goat keeping a pleasant experience. Tally and Hershey were does I absolutely hated to give up. I would hate to give up Lil' Miss. But Penny, as sweet and pretty as she is, I will not hate letting go.

LOL, I will first offer her back to her previous owner who hated to let her go, but had to and who was hoping to at least get babies back in the spring when she will be able to keep goats again. If she doesn't want her back, then I will put her up for sale. I won't hate letting her go, but in a way I will be sad. She is a very, sweet goat and a very beautiful goat. If I could keep a larger herd, I would be tempted to keep her.

I understand your frustration- we tried quite a few things but they may work for awhile and then she'd find a way around them. I'll be glad to have her back. She has lovely babies- look at Lil'Miss and Big Wig. I'm glad she's had a chance to be with you for a bit and I'm sorry for your frustration with the self-nursing.

I too have a doe-a samancha who is a doll, gives lots of milk -rather gave-and is great on the milk stand. She has beautiful babies. I suspect she is"using her own canteen." I teach at a prison and my students always ask me how the critters are doing. When I told them that I had a doe that was "auto-sucking"one puzzled guy asked why was she sucking on a car.I'm trying to educate them.

Miranda, oh yes, we are still very thankful for the time she has spent here even though she won't work out for our herd in the long term. Her babies are absolutely gorgeous and they have the most awesome personalities. Like I said, if I could keep a larger herd, I would be sorely tempted to keep her.

Neoskimo, that is too funny. LOL
