Doe not eating or drinking
Hi everyone
I have a 10-11 year old Boer doe. I lost one to bloat (she was a dear pet) about 8 years ago and ended up on Rainbow Bridge and crying my eyes out for a week straight and I'm hoping I don't have to go through this again and that someone here can advise me.
I have been keeping something of a log for the last day or so. I don't know how else to present this in the form of a post so I'll just post my log with some more notes at the bottom for now (I hope thats ok).
*** 10-11 year old doe ***
* Not eating (1 wk).
* Not drinking (1 wk).
* She is not bloated at all- nor is one side "sticking out".
* Not chewing cud (just noticed).
* Not belching.
* Alert, responsive.
* Temp=102.1 (within norm. range)
* First noticed withdraw from water/feed a week ago and have been closely monitoring.
* Has lost some weight.
* Is not in heat.
* Interior of mouth (tongue, gums, teeth) appear normal.
* Lots of rain for weeks, mold/fungal smell in stall lately (just cleaned stall again).
* Stands, walks normally and is not listless -does not lay around for long periods.
* Urinates normally, no discoloration or unusual odor.
* Butts head again stall from time to time but not excessively.
* I've noticed goat has not deficated in 4-5 hours (unusual). Wondering if she ingested a piece of baling twine...possible intestinal impaction?.
* Urinates normally butt still no poop.
* It's now the following morning. Lifted tail and squeezed out (extruded) thick, brownish mucous. In nearly a day and a half...still no poop.
* Does not seem to be in any obvious pain.
* Refuses any kind of food (even her favorite treats). Will not drink either. Just turns her head away. Yesterday, I got her to eat a piece of bread, a slice of apple, a piece of banana and a piece of cucumber. She also drank a small amount of OJ with electrolyte/vitamin/mineral powder mixed in.
* Back to head-banging again. Sigh )-:
Could the fact that she is not eating, drinking or pooping be the result of an intestinal impaction from baling twine or pine shavings or could the presence of mucous and no poop be caused by the fact that she has not eaten anything to "poop out" and perhaps she has some illness (again, she does not have a fever).
I'm reluctant to give her an appetite booster like B12, etc because if she does have an impaction, I don't want to make it worse by her gobbling up food and adding to the blockage. All I can think of at the moment is using a drenching bag to give her vegetable oil or Therabloat. I want her bowels moving and pushing out whatever is in there.
Unfortunately, we live in a VERY remote area with no access to a vet but if I can get some advice on how I can treat this poor animal, I would be very greatful. I know what it's like to lose an animal (particualrly a pet) and I dread going through this again and I don't want to get to the point where this poor animal is suffering.
Thank you SO MUCH!, boerkeeper
