Doe with Scur update
Well I got the wire horn saw because I didn't think loppers would fit between the scur & her head. So tonight we decide we better get it done. I have the Blue Wound powder handy just in case. I'm holding her & Dh is working the saw(Boy, it's amazing how strong those little goats are) & he's almost all the way through & the scur POPS OFF! I immediately grab the powder & it's really not bleedeing although their is a good size peice of tissue there that bloody, it's not actually bleeding.
I still put the blue powder on it & tomarrow will use the Blue Kote Spray. I really want to make sure the flies & bugs stay away from it this time of year.
I have Tri-Care but figure she won't want me actually touching that area for a few days.
Anyways, I guess this scur won't be cutting into her head any time soon anyways.

So glad it turned out okay!
We had the vet out yesterday & he had one of the wire scur saws. AWESOME THINGS!!!!! I probably can buy one for what the house call cost - but it was for the high dollar buck and we didn't want to risk using a saws-all (sp) on it.... LOL!

I ordered it from Hoeggers, I think it was $15.96 plus shipping. At least we'll have it for next time. Hope it doesn't pop off like today each time because I'm sure that can't feel too good!

I think I am going to look at the Hoeggers catalog - and call it a valuable lesson in observing how to do the job - I am sure this house call will cost us at least twice that - probably more. Next time though...

Well... I... well, y'see, I take a channel locks, grip the scur, and pull hard. It may take one or two yanks b/c the scurs can be a bit friable, but it usually gets them off - at least until the next time I have to pull it.

We didn't mean for it to come completely off, just meant to cut it back some.
I guess at least this way it will take longer to grow back that far.

Pony!
This sort of happened to us once. The nippers got stuck in the scur and as I was trying to free them, Tango jerked his head. The scur snapped off, Tango shrieked, and I burst into tears. He wouldn't look at me for three days, he'd just go hide. I felt awful.
Now I just use a Dremel. They don't love the buzzing and vibration, but it doesn't hurt.

I'd have felt really bad if my doe wouldn't come to me for 3 days. Thank goodness she's a real sweetie & only snubbed me for a day! It is healing right up though but hopefully next time won't come off like that.
I wonder do scurs always grow back the same?

BethW, the kids flinched, but there was no screaming or running. Maybe the fact that I'd put a fistful of sweet feed into the bucket had something to do with that.
My goats are pretty forgiving, as long as I have the treats handy.

Welllll, I will admit that Tango is a weenie and I am a wuss, so that might have had something to do with it.
On my wethers, the scurs never seem to grow back exactly the same. Sometimes they go in a slightly different direction or curl differently.
