My kingdom for a GOAT~!

I swear... if this isn't my luck.....

My DH FINALLY is behind the idea of getting dairy goats. He spent a little bit of time with RabbitPatch's goats and now knows we'll drink and use the milk. Shoot- he even went out and bought all the suppiles we need to make a goat-safe paddock and brought home pallets so we could built shelter!

Now?

I can't find milking does anywhere. Or does of any sort. Everyone has bucklings and bucks for sale, but no does.

I don't want show goats or fancy goats or even registered goats. Just a couple of does in milk. RP, DH and I are hopefully visiting a few folks on Wednesday, so wish us luck there.

Sigh.

Rant over You may now return to your regularly scheduled lives.

See if you can find out where the goat shows are being held in your area. We're getting into fall fair season up here, and there's a goat show almost every weekend from now until mid-October.

Go, talk to the breeders (but, please, not as they're trying to get their goats into the ring!) and tell them what you're looking for. If they're like me, they'll have some perfectly lovely, great-milking goats at home, because they're just not show-quality.

Good luck!

Thanks, Pook! That's a great idea. The TVA fair is in town in Sept (I think) and I know they do shows there. I'll drop by and talk to some of the breeders there- not while they're busy, though.

Are you looking for a particular breed?

There are some pretty active yahoo dairy goat groups who frequently post for sale ads, and done even set up transports to other states and such...... You could join a few (I've had my best luck with joining the groups with the most members & most recent activity) & post what your looking for.

Most are breed specific, but I've seen ads posted for mixes & grade does who typically are more affordable.

Good luck & congrats on your upcoming girls!

ORRRRR haul yourself down to drought stricken oklahoma and take my goats off my hands. brats. Pick locks with their lips they do. Whine like 3 year old girls. Chase the dog and head butt the cats. Not a fence I have ever seen they can't climb. They climb trees...yes they do I swear. WHY? WHO KNOWS???? Pretty cute...but a royal pain. The black one is satan's daughter I am sure.

oh they are like the red headed step child...you may talk bad about them but you could not ever actually give them away and will cry for days when they die a natural death.

did I mention that I have to get my subaru painted before winter because although she is not new (the car, not the goat)...I really like the car and don't want those little GOAT HOOF MARKS to rust out.

yeah...never a dull minute.

They'll appreciate that! Nothing worse than trying to drag a 120lb goat through a crowd of city folks pushing double-wide strollers when they're calling you for your class, and everyone says "Can I pet your goat?" NO!

And if you're not sure what breed you're looking for, you'll get a chance to see all the different breeds.

Implement paint is your friend. Wears like iron, almost never chips, and gives a very nice goat-proof finish.

RRR, have you talked with Red Sonja? She may be able to help you.

Darned shame you're not near me. I have a lovely Snubian for sale. Fantastic milk lines, great barrel, personality - and she's QUIET.

No does for sale here, sorry. And I don't know of any elsewhere either. 100% buckling year here too. Okay we only had one kid born but still, it was a buckling!

There are sometimes does in milk for sale on the NubianTalk Yahoo group I'm on. There's even a breeder near Knoxville with Six M Galaxy goats that had a doeling and a buckling for sale recently (both sold I'm pretty sure. Which is good because I was *this close* to buying the doeling for more $$ than I've spent on my entire herd to date...)

If you're looking for a specific breed there's probably a Yahoo group for it, and I know NubianTalk has a Friday Market deluge of for sale posts each week so I'd guess the others do too.

There might be some homesteading folks in Tennessee that are looking to sell some of their milkers, have you posted on the Barter board?

Also the county fairs or your Deptartment of Argriculture might be a couple places to look. Even Cooperative Extension in your area or your local mom & pop type feed stores may know folks that raise & sell goats.

I have two does I would sell reasonably all healthy email me if you are interested at the address below. All are quality registered goats but at very reasonable prices, same in fact as the fugly things you see on craigslist but only to the right person.

I've been looking too. They don't come around as often as bucks, they are in higher demand so you have to keep checking craigslist, and etc.. The does you are looking for will pop up.

The Wilson County Fair (Middle Tennessee) has a great Dairy Goat Show and brings people in from all over the state so that would be a great place to meet breeders. Unfortunately for me, this year was VERY, VERY, VERY heavy with bucklings. Like 75% bucklings.....ARUGH

Get your does from people who will let you see them call them, see them happily jump on the stand and be milked. DONT buy on looks alone. My neice and her husband gave me 2 nice nubian does. One had cae so ive gotten rid of her. The other everybody wants to buy. BUT, She wont milk. After she dropped and lost her kids, due to my ignorance, and a darn buck I coulda knocked in the butt with a ball bat, they died. I tried to milk her and it was a hit and miss operation as she didnt like the idea, so I let her dry up before I gave her mastitis. Id never BUY one without seeing her happily leap up on the stantion and be milked.
