Geep?
What are the chances of getting a geep out of a goat and sheep?

Extremely low. Even if conception occured, the embryo would be unlikely to make it to full term.

I had a goat bred by a sheep when she was in residence elsewhere. She aborted.

It's about as likely as a human and an ape producing an embryo.

I was unaware that they could actually mate, seeing as the chromosomes are so different.

Like I said, it's about as likely as a human ape breeding. Sure, it can happen, but it's extremely unlikely. Like,if you consider all the sheep that are kept with goats, and all the possible breedings that never happen, it might as well be statistically impossible.

How do you know this can happen? Have you seen documentation of it? Inquiring minds want to know.

Let's just say that in a former life (before I taught biology), I worked in a primate research center. I know that things happen in a dish that don't happen in nature.
Speaking of dishes - I stand by my statistically impossible. The only verified cases of "geep" are mechanically manipulated in a lab. A naturally occurring case of sheep-goat breeding is so rare as to be "never". One case in Botswana does not a trend make.
Oh, and by the way - that story in uk Mail? The Daily Mail is like the European version of the National Enquirer. Your other link references the same story. B o g u s.

I just google. It's up to inquiring minds to evaluate the links. Thank you for doing that service.

Actually, I was fascinated by this a few years ago when I was told that all of my does would be bred by the rams and abort their fetuses and be ruined for the season. I thought it was all hooey. Then I looked it up. Here's a peer reviewed journal article analysis:
Fertilization rates, male x female:
ram X does: 72%
buck X does: 96%
ram X ewes: 90%
buck X ewes: 0%
Ram X doe fetuses died at 5 to 10 weeks.
source
So actually, there is some truth to it! Some of these were natural breeding and they even tried AI on the ewes with buck semen and couldn't get it to take. Given the chance to mate with a male from their own species, I don't think they would choose a cross. Now the males on the other hand probably aren't paying much attention to species...

I am currently keeping my lamancha ram and my suffolk/cheviot ram together. They have formed a, um, special relationship. Anything in your study about that?

All male goats do this anyway. Normal. Do you need a study, or is anecdotal enough?

You can come study out our front window all day long if you want. There's nothing more funny, or gross, than three horny rams in their love triangle. I get to see quite a show while washing dishes!

So would that be a "cheap sheep peep" show?

Everyone thinks they have a geep everytime a hair ram gets their ewes. here is an add that has two claimed geep, all they are are barbado crosses. They had an add up earlier in the year claiming that the only male on the farm was a goat so they had to be. I dont have the heart to email them telling them a blackbelly jumped the fence and ran off
http://cleveland.craigslist.org/grd/2530517880.html
they are also good at breading. Wonder if they use shake and bake?
