question about mini-nubian

hi,
have been wanting to buy a Nubian doe to breed to our registered Nigerian Buck for mini's, and a man has a mini-nubian (able to be registered) for sale on CL, but have no idea what to look for in a mini.

She was born in May of 2010 and has airplane ears instead of the floppy long ears of a Nubian. All the searches I have done show mini-nubians with the
floppy ears, which I like.

here is the link, but it only shows her from the front, just wondering if I should pass or ask more questions and if so, which one's?

thanks!

Nothing in those pics looks like a Mini Nubian to me.

that's what I was thinking, the mini is sposed to be the last pic, but she looks more like our Nigerian's than Nubian..

ETA:

I don't understand all the F1, F2, etc. when breeding for mini nubians but I believe you can still end up with airplane ears like your nigerian buck or floppy ears like your doe.
I think for the small size with the floppy ears that is like an F3 but hopefully someone that knows about these things can explain it to both of us because I'd like to know as well.

I *think* F1 is first generation, F2 is second generation, etc.

yes on the generations. You go by the lowest parent, so anything out of a full nubian or full nigerian is F1 even if one parent was F4 or such.

I have an F1 with half-drop ears (sort of like dog ears - she can hold them out but the ends drop down), F2s that look like nubians, but are small, an F1 that looks like a nubian and I think will be small, but her full brother with the same look will probably be larger...

you are going for the nubian look and a small (but not nigerian) sized goat.

You do not usually have the long ears in Mini Nubians
until F3 or up - at least in my experience.

But to get the smaller size goat with the long floppy ears doesn't the OP want a F3 buck & a F3 doe to breed together to get what she wants?

thanks backfourty,

that is what I was wondering, don't know much about any of it, but know what I would like, lol

I just planned/hoped to get a Nubian doe, breed to our Nigerian buck and aim for the best of both.

Milk high in butterfat, smaller Nubian body size, Nigie temperment and larger udder/more milk production than our Nigerians,
not too much to hope for, eh?
So far my fave milk has been from a Nubian/Saanen cross, she had lots of rich creamy milk.
but I wanted a smaller size goat, Faith was quite large, skittish and harder to handle than our dwarfs.

Well, you have nothing to lose by doing the experiment!

I have an F1 mini nubian buck with the bigger ears like rootsandwings that kinda flop some but not real long like the nubians but not really airplane ears like nigerians either.
His Dam was an F1 mini nubian & his sire was a nigerian. The breeder we got him from had the mother but had already sold the sire. His Mother was still a pretty good size girl, long floppy ears, covered in moon spots, nice big udder, but not as tall at the back as a standard nubian.

I bred him to a purebred nubian doe I have & have a set of twin doelings born in June from the 2 of them. They both have the long floppy ears but already stand as tall at the back just about as my adult Nigerian does' so we'll see how big they will actually be. I have 1 that I think is already sold(lady sending deposit Monday) & the other 1 we are keeping.

She wants goats with the characteristics she is looking for, the F1, F2, etc just shows how close they are to upgrading to "purebred" status. Think of it as working a grade up to american status - if you breed junk, you generally get junk, no matter how many generations you have, and if you breed quality, you generally get quality - possibly right away in a 50%.

again - I have good ears in both F1s and F2s. I have not had any airplane ears, but I have had goats mature too large, so I am trying to increase the nigerian %age and work with the smaller animals. They do seem to reach adult size younger than my full nubians.

I bred some gloriously long eared Nubian does to my Nigi buck and still ended up with the helicopter ears, which no one wanted to buy - so I ceased breeding the combo - lol
