I think my goats are insane

The heat index is 117 degrees right now. It's impossible out. Spencer my horse is taking it the worse. Head hanging in loafing shed covered in sweat. Ducks are in their pool, chickens under the horse trailer in the shade. Dogs in the house.
The goats are laying in the sun! Why on earth would they do that?! They have a nice barn with cement floors that keeps it cooler and a fan. I keep refreshing their ice water and then I see them laying in the sun. I just don't get them.

We don't have much shade, just a little strip along the edge of the goat pen. My girls make good use of their their little bit of shade by staying in it all day.

Ok...I made them go back in the barn. Now I am big, dripping sweat bag. I don't know if they will stay in there...why on earth would they want to lay in the sun?

I have some that prefer shade, some prefer a big dirt pile in the sun, and still other lay in the Black Plastic feeder, in the sun!

Our goats only stay in the sun if they have to lol. I have vampire goats. My smooth coated Collie will go outside when its the hottest part of the day and lay out like hes dead and sleep. I have to drag him in the house.

I, too, have vampire goats. When the day is at its hottest, they're on our porch laying under the potting table, lol.

Goats live all over the middle east. Gets much hotter there than in the states.
I doubt it's bothering your goats much at all

BTW, our sheared llamas do that, too!

Hotter than a two dollar pistol here in Iowa with a heat index nearing 120.
I have some big boers that have been sunning themselves in the worst of this mess. They have shade and shelter and a fan in the barn.

It would have cooked my brain for good to stay out in the sun like they have been doing, so yes your goats are insane as are mine.

Don't put your own health at risk trying to out think a goat.

Good luck,

Chris

I don't know what our heat index is here today but I was a big ole sweat bag without hardly moving outside!
My goats & all the other critters here were happy for shade today although I did see the goats out in the sun browsing for a while at different times today, they didn't stay in the sun long though!

Something must be wrong with your goats Michele!! They just aren't normal!
