Some people put it in a marshmello or on a peanut butter cracker to get it down. I use a pill popper but it has a different handle for 2 fingers...I can't remember where I got it. KimM told me where to get it. It is very easy to do.

Hi Cannon farms! I got my bolus from you recently. Yes, I still lost one in the straw : )
But you should see the difference in my Togg doe. She went from a washed out dull light brown to a deep shiny medium brown color. She must certainly have been copper deficeint.
I hope you'll continue to package them and sell them here. I'll need to order more one day soon.

Hi all. I use Copasure capsules. When I give grain feed I sometimes put in a small squirt of goat drench vitamins and empty about 1/3 of a calf stength capsule into it. My Alpine is fussy and won't eat peanutbutter or jam or marshmallow. I have had some success pouring the little copper granules into a fresh corn muffin though. It is an ongoing experiment. But the vitamins in the grain seems to work best.

I've given mine copper by mixing the rods in corn meal. They lick it up like they are starving. The hardest part is fighting off the other 2 while you feed the one you want to treat.

Today I'm buying a balling gun if I can find one.

Putting it in food puts you at risk that the goat will bite it and/or the copper will simply pass through the digestive tract. This is probably why so many people who claim to bolus still have present goats that sure sound like they have a copper deficiency.

I bought mine from Ashley (Southerngurl).

I HATE the baling gun, & yes I'm using the smallest one. Going to hunt for a dog pill gun as I think it would be easier to handle.

I bolused my Alpine girl with orange slices.... I take her 2...1st one, no bolus in it, she chews it, then I pretend to give her 2nd side to another goat and she snaps it up and swallows it whole, no chewing what so ever....So with her there is no difference between my orange slice & baling gun, both go down whole....my other goats chew it, so for them I have to use the baling gun.

Mixed with dry corn meal I'm sure it just falls away when it gets in the gut the same as if it was in a dissolving capsule. In order to chew it up they would have to really spend a lot of time chewing on the rods because they are so tiny.

I am confused - either way the copper rods end up in the digestive track and with the way that goats chew their cud and digest food what's the difference. If the capsule makes it down whole it dissolves and the rods get mixed with food. If it goes down mixed with food it is in the same place - mixed with food.

there has been a study showing the xrays of it being given both ways and non was better than the other. However the risk of it getting logged some where down to the gut is a bit risky. I dont sugar coat it I just pop it down with the gun it can take some practice but once you get it you dont loose one down. I always try to add an extra one just in case.

I think it would depend on the food. If it's in something sticky like a marshmallow it could be stuck in it and rechewed until the marshmallow dissolves. In a capsule or corn meal it would fall out an lodge in the folds of the gut and not be brought up with the cud.

The rods are so tiny I don't see how many could get chewed even if it was brought up in the cud.

Some information on copper bolusing. I suggest everyone who uses them to read these. It will explain why its important for the rods to embed in the rumen and how to safely use a marshmallow. There is a certain mechanism to using copper rods and it's pretty easy to use them improperly and then wonder why your goats still look like they have a copper deficiency. Also, good information on making your own boluses.
