Scrapie Tags...
So, in talking with the dairy goat superintendent at the county fair, they told me that all goats have to have a scrapie tag. I could be completely missing something, but I am pretty sure I was at an ADGA sanctioned show this spring and those goats did not have scrapie tags in their ears. I am fighting this as much as possible, but would like to know how close to correct I am. I have only been to one dairy goat show, so I obviously have a lot to learn. I am afraid of the tags getting ripped out and messing up their tattoos that will hinder showing them in sanctioned shows.

Your tattoo IS your scrapie ID.

You DO NOT have to get tags - talk to another AG person in your state - maybe look up the info online - WV' AG site about scrapie explains you use your tattoo and do not need tags in the ears. Now here, they tell you get the tags and don't put them in - which I might do.

The county fair probably has their own rules. First, you need a scrapies ID, a registration with the USDA. When you do that, you can register your ADGA herd ID as your scrapies, but it isn't automatically your ID. When I go to my county fair, I have to show them that my goats have permanent ID (lamancha tail web tattoos) AND that the tattooed herd name matches my scrapies paperwork. I had to have custom scrapies tags printed with my ADGA herd ID for my sheep, because prior to having goats, I had a regulation 7 digit USDA scrapies ID.

Same as houndlover. I registered for a scrapies premise ID and set it up so that my ADGA herd ID are my scrapies ID, it wasn't automatic.

Registered goats do not need a registered scrapie ID. Non-registered goats require that you file to get a scrapie ID. I know this because I dealt with the USDA to get my scrapie ID for the non-registered goats and had to have the tatoo slightly different. My registered goats have the ADGA tattoo no problem, the non-registered have two letters added. Again, I was not required to change anything on the ADGA goats as they were already trackable through my herd registration and ADGA papers.

I honestly think its because they are into meat goats that they haven't taken the time to recognize or familiarize with the rules in regards to dairy goats. Going to try and be patient and hope we can get some resolve. Thanks for your help guys.

In Oregon, you still need to provide scrapies ID proof, even if your animals are registered. You need to provide the paperwork from the USDA that states you are in the scrapies program, and that they recognize your herd ID as scrapies identification. Breed registry is not the same as scrapies participation.

I didnt have to have tags to go through TN, SC but if I had to take the goats into KY the state told my vet I had to have them tagged and tattooed to enter if they had ever been around sheep, tats where fine otherwise.

We both live in Oregon and what houndlover said is true, I thought this was a federal wide program but maybe it is state specific?

You have to talk to the state veterinarian about each state's rules. I travel between Missouri and Texas with my goats on a regular basis, and I personally called each state vet.
Talking to the local veterinarians was useless.

You don't have to put them in the ear, is all. Around here, putting it on their collar or pen in acceptable.

Well, I have talked with a gentleman at the ALPC (Arkansas Livestock and Poultry Commission) and he told me that as long as my animals are registered, their registered tattoos are sufficient, no need to add anything, just will have to show my registration certs at check-in time. So, after talking to him, I called the show super. She had spoken with the county agent, who spoke with someone (only assume the same guy at ALPC) but results were the same! Thanks for all your help. Loving having a resource at my fingertips with a knowledgeable group of people!
