Reburn???

We disbudded our girls at 6 days old.... They where born on May 19 (nigerian dwarfs) This is my first time dealing with disbudding... Their seems to be horn growth on both of the girls... But i cant till if it is growth or just the nub from the disbudding...it is symmetrical, on both of them. How do i till if it is growth or just the bud that was burned... I could have sworn we took the cap off but it was our first time... Any advice would be appreciated

Need pics.

Taking the cap off does not guarantee a good burn, unfortunately.

Are they scurs? Wiggly? Small?

If you can get pictures that would be good.

Honestly without vet at this age I would not re-burn them unless they were numbed well or put under. Mine get done at a week old by someone else and sometimes the boys end up with scurs never the does and they get knocked off during play. They are tiny and do not bother them or me and I would not re-do it because of scurs pain wise or cost wise.

Can you post pictures?

I reburned my Alpine buck to fix scurs..... As long as I do it properly there isn't a problem. I'd rather reburn than have scurs....

Some of the scurs I've seen are horrible, mishapen things that can grow into their faces & heads.

When I burn, I go for 6 seconds, hold an ice pack on while I let my iron heat, do the other side & repeat (so two, 6 second burns on each side).

I redid my friend's Alpine x Nubian doe for her at almost 4 months old. We did give her banamine before (1cc per 100lbs, do not over dose) & all went well & her head is smooth & pretty.

My Alpine buck was redone by me, the vet & another breeder! He still grows small scurs but unlike the ones he had before, these stay short & wiggle. He has knocked them off twice now, so in his case I wont be trying yet again for a perfect head.....As long as they wiggle & he's knocking them off on his own, I'll leave them be.

My vet only uses disbudding irons and said he no longer puts goats under anesthesia for horn removal because he's lost several on the table. So for me, I don't have the option of using a vet & full sedation.

I agree, without pix hard to say. But I would speculate if this is your first time, likely these are scurs beginning. I would venture most newbies do not burn long enough. For me it took a good three years to get it right - definitely a practiced skill. Even a copper ring doesn't insure a clean head.

I agree copper ring doesn't mean it's perfect..

This was my first year disbudding....learned from youtube videos & internet pictures.

All of my kids are smooth headed & scur free. I disbudded two kids for a friend, they are scur free. Redid two kids for another friend & it was uneventful & sucessful (one of those being a 4 month old).

My Alpine buck is the only one I'm having problems with.....but he hit the 75lb mark at 14 weeks & I simply can't do him by myself..

Anywho....point of this post is anyone can do this....even a newbie
