Hay stretcher pellets
Can I feed hay stretcher pellets as a substitute for hay this time of year, when my goats are on pasture for about half of the day (I've been putting them in mid-day, when it's really hot and sunny out)? What are the pros and cons of hay stretcher pellets as opposed to "real" hay?

Tractor supply brand is preserved with animal fat so I dont like those. I have used hay stretcher in my feed program for years until it got too high to be practical. Nutrina has a good one, it contains rice bran in it as well as forage so even though it may give them the runs until they get used to it, it does help with weight gain.
I would weigh the cost of those vrs regular hay pellets.

Just get hay pellets for forage. The stretcher stuff has sub-par quality.

generally its alfalfa pellets and either beet pulp or rice bran which can have a good place in the feed room. However it has not been any less expensive than hay pellets lately.

Then ya'll must be getting completely different hay stretcher pellets than WE have. Our Co-op has alfalfa pellets, beet pulp and rice bran... which I sometime get to top dress or for other purposes.
That is certainly not what is contained in the ingredients list on the hay stretcher! What I see on the hay stretcher ingredients is that the first three are by-products...roughage, forage, and hay by-products. Maybe some other stuff further down like you mentioned, but definitely not near the main ingredients.

different feed mills different things. I did notice they cheapend the Nutrena right before I quit buying it, not by a concerning thing. They have that under the Cargill name not Nutrena i see, same company.

~grinz~ Just goes to show....
To the OP: The answer is...
Depends upon the ingredients. Check your ingredients and if they are good, AND are cheaper than hay, sure. If not, just get more hay.

Hay stretcher in my area is junk by products, so I personally wouldn't use it.

Pretty much the same here. It is supposed to be hay stretcher, something that extends your hay or causes your animals to eat less hay. By that very definition, it needs to be cheaper than hay or why not just buy more hay rather than buy stretcher?
We also have forage stretcher and pasture stretcher here that is basically the same stuff for the same purposes.
And, generally, if it is cheaper than hay, then it is probably made up of ingredients that are not as good as hay.
