fresh Goat Milk (CL ad in Georgia)She wants it cheep/free!
http://atlanta.craigslist.org/nat/wan/2467502775.html
"I am looking for cheap or free goat milk around the mall of georgia area. If you have goats and nothing to do with the extra milk, please contact me."
I don't think folks understand how much time, money and effort we put into caring for our goats in such a fashion that we end up with "extra milk".
I think I'll go up to the Mall of GA Toyota dealership and ask if I can have a Scenia (SP?) van as they clearly have extra vehicles on their lot. Or maybe for $500, because that would be all I can afford, but I really need a bigger car to haul my family around in. You can help a mom out can't you?

Wild, isn't it? Wonder if they'll get their "free" goats' milk any time soon?

Tell her to buy her own goat & invest all the time, money & labor.
I'd rather feed it to my barn cats & the dogs......which BTW, is what I do

What's so odd about it? From reading this board, I get the distinct impression that goats are just a hobby for many - pets really. A good goat can give a gallon of milk a day and that's way more than most families consume. I know TONS of people who pour extra down the drain because they don't have other animals to feed it to. Some people just want goats, and find they don't like the milk, have too much, think they'll be able to sell it and can't. I bet that person finds milk. People give away goats all the time, what's the difference with giving away the milk?

Maybe she is in need. God will bless someone who shares a bit with her. Instead of looking down on her look at it as an opportunity to plant a seed into a life.
I always give things for free when I have the opportunity. And every litter of puppies I get, I always give one away for seed, or else use the money from selling it as seed into a ministry somewhere. I actively look for opportunities to seed. I love harvest! It is so much better than a simple five bucks or a few hundred dollars from selling something. God blesses so much better than anything I could sell.
That is an opportunity for someone to plant a seed that won't cost them much, but will harvest a great blessing to them and possibly to her. Maybe she isn't a believer? What could you sow into her life just starting with a simple kindness? You could share the Fact that you give because God gives. It is an opportunity, not something to look down on.

In Texas, I give milk away. Can't legally sell it. Also give cheese away. It makes me happy.

Me too, except I make a killing off the containers If I knew some one was in need I would gladly share, I just cant stand those that expect to get everything for free. I was just talking with my husband the other day about once I get my milk license that I wouldnt feel right about charging the 10-12 a gallon that most folks do around here. I dont believe in selling something I have for more than what I could afford.

before I got my babies I needed goat milk for some exotic birds that were sick. Yes I know it sounds strange! I put and ad up for milk for cheap or trade and a woman called me. said she had some but she needed some labor as she was overwhelmed at the time. I came out and milked all her goats and I got a gallon free for doing it. It worked great for both of us. I came out every week and milked for her so she could do her other chores and she said she could easily spare a gallon. If I lived there and had does in milk I would call her and see if I could help. Never hurts to be nice.

Even the gobs of goats milk in my fridge doesn't come to me for free. Gosh - time to make more cheese and buttermilk. I do give away milk to neighbors and friends however and they all love it.

same here. Of course if I read Indiana laws correctly I really can't give it away either. I put it on a table though and I really can't help it if people find a knife or a cracker and help themselves. They've been warned

I know most folks say birds cant process dairy or do you find that its just cow milk like most humans? Sorry to drift but I have often wondered if it would bennifit my birds to have some.

When I was little my great grandmother would say "Don't sell anything you can afford to give for free." And she could barely afford a thing! I've often thought of that saying and try my best to live up to it.

We've fed extra milk to our chickens in the past and they loved it.

I pay a pretty penny & work my tail off just to keep my goats...... Technically to the best of my knowledge I'm not supposed to give it away.... I have dogs, cats & chickens who benefit from anything I can't use....On FB a girl my hair dresser knows had a family from Nigeria staying with them & needed goat's milk for their baby. Drove 35 minutes one way, twice to deliver them milk (free, on my gas), they never even returned my jars, & I didn't mind a bit.....It was for a baby, & as a mother I could do no less. I give a gallon a week to my friend whose does aren't providing enough for her family... I use her jars for her milk & wouldn't dream of charging her a dime, but then again she appreciates what I put into it & shes given me fresh eggs more times than I can count...
I guess the looking for cheap or free milk got me today... afterall I did barn work in the horrible heat, trimmed feet, then wanted to cry at the feed store over my feed bill.....My milk is far from free to me & certainly not "cheap"....
Personally I've never met a goat person who pours milk down the drain! Everyone I know drinks it, freezes it, makes cheese/yogurt/ice cream, makes soap or raises animals on it..... I simply couldn't imagine working so hard for this only to pour it down the drain.

I wish I had enough milk to give away.
As it is, many, many moons ago (buffalo cross Great Plains) when I was pregnant with my daughter, a co-worker of my husband brought me a gallon of fresh, raw goat's milk twice a week. His parents raised goats for show, and their goats were on test, but they really didn't have any use for all of the milk.
4-H'ers sometimes have more milk than they can consume, or their family turns their nose up at goat milk, and they are happy to give it away. The same with the FFA'ers.
So, it is not an unreasonable ad. She is not asking for people to go out of their way to provide her with milk...she is asking for those that have excess which they would not do anything with to, instead of pouring down the drain or on the lawn, please give it to her instead.
In other words, she is asking permission to rummage through your trash, except before you actually throw it away. Personally, I see nothing ethically or morally wrong with such a request. I cannot even find anything inherently rude in such a request.

Sorry for Drifting- Cannon Farms I have had birds for a 20 years and I only find that cows milk in large quantities will bother them. Goats milk has always been fine for my birds and I have never had any issues. I used it for some baby Macaws that were full of e-coli and according to the vet should have been dead. They are now fledging and doing fine thanks to a generous woman and her goat milk.
All my birds love cheese and yogurt too.

I have problems with a system called "Freecycle" rather than Craig'sList. On FC they will even tell you what size free color tv they are looking for!
Reading all the replies made me stop and ponder. There was not enough information in the request to get a real "feel" about it. I did wonder if she (like me) has never had fresh quality goats milk and would like to try it BEFORE she invests in goats?
I raise poultry and am forever being asked if I have "extra" eggs so I have charity with the OP's inital reaction. After all my birds just walk around and poop out those wonderful protien packages! LOL! 4- fifty pound bags of feed yesterday was over 60 dollars and I won't figure out the per egg cost to myself..I'd give up the birds.

WoW.
I am amazed at the amount of folks that refuse to share. I once was awoken in the dead of night by a woman whom I did not know that had a mare die during birth, and came to me to see if I may happen to have goat colostreum (sp?) I GAVE ger a gallon..
then, later sold the milk to keep the foal alive. All the talk about being "neighborly" I guess is just talk? I may not walk in the big circles... but I was raised right.

I suspect a lot of people here would give goat milk away free if they saw someone truely in need, but these same people don't like it when they see someone trying to get something for nothing, particularly when they know how much time and expense goes into producing a gallon of goat milk. My neighbors give me eggs, and I have offered them milk, but so far they have not taken me up on my offer...
