Which bedding to use?

Hello all. The barn is done ! Yea !

Now I need to make sure I use the best bedding type for it. The base is crushed stone and has pretty good drainage. I was thinking of using the pelleted type because the urine will drain, mostly, through and thus last the longest. I used this type for horses years ago and loved it, however I cannot recall if I had stall mats. I have some extra mats, but when I used straw For the goats, OH what a mess!

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Personally I'm not a big fan of pelleted bedding, it's not soft and doesn't seem like it would be very comfortable to sleep in. I alternate between straw and shavings. The straw seems to work better as bedding for my goats (mine don't eat it, but some probably would), and lasts a little longer, but wood shavings are easier to clean out.

I use straw here in Missouri. Can't get it in my part of Texas, so I use shavings there.

I have concrete floors. I use a stall mat on one side and I have a table, a spool and a hut for them to jump up on. I use wasted hay in a pile with shavings underneath...that is where they pee and I basically just have to remove that blob daily and freshen things up. In the winter I am deep bedding with shavings and wasted hay

Use shavings except at kidding time, then use straw. Shavings are great because they absorb urine very well. They reduce the ammonia odor, and are easier to clean out than straw. They are not good for kidding, because they stick to everything. Straw or old newspapers are better at that time.

Due to our lack of trees mine eat the shavings They act like I tossed treats in there.
I use straw and waste hay. Pellets are hard and they will scrape an area to sleep, well they do that with hay bedding as well lol. My floor is dirt so they like to dig at the ground anyways, helps when I am cleaning it out to have it dug up

When I clean out the old bedding and put down fresh gravel, the does love to sleep on the gravel. So until it starts getting cooler at nights, I just leave the gravel for them. Then when it starts getting cold at night, I bed down with straw, thickly. It seems expensive to put straw in so thick, but its actually the better bet. You actually don't use as much straw in the long run if you put it in thick to start with.
