What can abscesses be other than CL?

We were going to buy a buck and saw a single large abscess on his neck.

They are going to have him tested, but what other things could cause an abscess besides CL?

Vaccination sites can abscess. Scorpion, spider and snake bites can abscess. Thorns can abscess. Small wounds that become infected can abscess. There are also tumors, etc.

Have the abscess CONTENTS tested.

Honestly, I wouldn't risk it. Even though there's other reasons for abscesses or lumps, I wouldn't buy a goat with one, period.

Splinters, injuries and more. I once had one with a small lump and it ended up being a shot lump but it was not on the neck and I did freak out.

Where is it located on his neck?
Is it large? Hair gone?
Is it a Boer buck?

They need to have the pus tested and not a blood test, it is far more accurate.
Until the results come back I would not have him at my place. All you need is the dang thing to burst at your place. If it is CL that would contaminate your property for quite a while.

I had one doe get an abcess from a wound because her and the queen would often play rough. I would insist on testing the contents and if they won't allow it, just move on.

stickers, splinters from wood feeders or fencing, insect bites, vacinations sites, even the injection site from a vitamin or antibiotic shot, all can become infected and absess. get the puss from the abcess tested. the results will be more accurate than a blood test. if it is + for cl or they won't test it - walk away and find another buck from a different breeder.
