I'd say that someone can't tell sheep from goats and is ignorant of the terminology.

Sigh.

Maybe the goats have split personality disorder...or would that be more like split species disorder?

Here's the reply I got:

Well I do also have sheep, but I believe the ad you are referring to is the
4 goats.

I have 4 goat breed females, aged 3-6 months.
Sorry am new to the terminology.
Paul

Gee, my shearer, who breeds some of the top club sheep in the COUNTRY, referred to my ram as a "buck" - so I should assume he is ignorant? People who own both sheep and goats often refer to males and females with the same terms, and yet, everyone around us seems to understand what we mean.

Using terms accidentally is one thing - using wrong terms on a regular basis as though they are the correct terms or in advertising will hurt your credibility, IMO. If I saw that add and was in the mode to buy, I would not have clicked on it, except maybe to giggle.

I, too, talk about my rabbits 'kidding' or my goats 'kindling' in conversation, but correct myself if I notice, lol. Most people understand.

But yet, constant misspellings and poor grammar doesn't seem to hurt anyone's credibility on HST.

It can, honestly, hurt your credibility anywhere you talk about your livestock, IMO. Most of us are inclined to correct misspellings or incorrect terminology. Most try to do it in a non-offensive manner, to help and not critisize. IMO, inccorect spelling isn't really a BIG deal. Incorrect terminology, however, IS important to me because improper use of terminology often shows a lack of knowledge of the animal overall. I understand some terms are regional... But I will honestly say I don't inquire on 'nannies' or 'billies', or on ads that talk about the 'milk bag' or 'titties', lol. Bucks, does, udder, teats.

~grinz~ houndlover, if you honestly believe that HST is a hotbed of bad grammar, poor spelling, and insane typos, please go browse Facebook for 1 hour and return here. On HST, at least everyone is TRYING.

I am with mygoats on this. Proper terminology means I am more likely to be talking to someone who knows the livestock. If an ad says "Nannies" or "Billies", they ARE using proper nomenclature.... for meat and/or fiber goats. If that terminology is used and no breed is specified, then I assume the goats being sold are meat/fiber goats. If those terms are used and *Nubians* are being sold, I assume the person breeds Boers mostly, and was using Nubians does to start a percentage herd.

People that do meat/fiber goats use terms like "milk bag" or "tits/titties" because, frankly, they don't get up close and personal with those aspects of goaty anatomy.

Bucks, does, udder, teats, mentioning attachments in an ad, etc., lets me know the person has a clue about dairy goats, and that is who I would rather buy stock from. All of the rest of the words mentioned belongs in the meat/fiber goat world. If a person is confusing meat goat terms with sheep terms, then I wouldn't buy either sheep or goats from him.

I say "him" because women, on average, ESPECIALLY in the South, tend to post better ads than that, and are more likely to research and know what they have. TEND TO...remember, exceptions to everything.

Don't feel bad- I refer to women as being bred. Not pregnant, bred.
