Doeling Sick

I have a 14 week old doeling who is on death's door. I know there is no saving her at this point, but I would sure like to know what I could be dealing with. She has low temp ( not even registering) . I found her with her head cocked back and moaning in pain. Her eyes seem a little swollen and the membrane in the corner of one of her eyes is sticking out a little bit. She seems to have a little "tick" in her head movement. She is grinding her teeth and I pray she passes soon...I don't want her to be in pain. I know with the low temp that there is probably no saving her. When I found her this morning I gave her b-comlex, pen g, banamine.

your probably right, and personally I would have eased her to a faster end. It does sound like polio but b complex unless in massive doses wont do much good.
Did those things seem to help at all?

She seems more comfortable now, but still low temp. I was thinking polio too. I thought she seemed a bit off last night, but when I saw her come over to eat hay with everyone else I just assumed things were ok. I should have checked on her closer darn it!

You cant over do b complex I would do at least 30cc sub q, if she was mine id be doing more like 60 in a couple different spots just because its cheaper than loosing a kid.
is her mouth cold as well?

yes...mouth is cool...not actually cold. I put a blanket from the dryer on her. I won't give up, but I'm not holding out alot of hope. I will give some more b-complex.

polio effects the brains ability to function properly including the part that controls internal temp so yes, keep her warm. One of the does I had that was my first would go from cold to burning up hot. That was also the longest I have ever worked on saving a doe, it took a week for her to get back right.
Banamine will do a good job with the swelling just becareful not to over dose

Isn't banamine dangerous with an animal with such a low temp?

I have no idea, but she was in pain and I knew she wouldn't make it anyway. I've BTDT got the t-shirt and I'm so sick of it I'm about to give up. At the time I gave it to her I had not taken her temp and I was trying to make her comfortable.

not ideal nor is it ideal if they are in respiratory distress but is a tool used in treatment of polio and what is done is done.

It sounds like listeriosis to me. I would do her a favor and put her down now and not wait.

There's a sticky at the top of this forum on butchering that shows the proper way.

Sorry.

She passed away peacefully on her own

I wouldn't have put her down anyway...just not the way I do things.

Thank you.

She was a bottle baby so you can imagine our heartbreak right now

I am assuming it was from moldy hay. The round bales that my DH insists on buying always have a spot or two of mold. I go through it best I can, but evidently I missed some. I've been looking to buy a used car. I think I'll make it a truck so that I can start buying my own hay

I am so sorry, it hurts to lose them, and goats go sooo fast. Go to Jeffers and get the concentrated Bcomplex vitamins, they are super highly concentrated so you don't need to give so much.

I think one of my neighbors overfed my Frosty pygmy a couple of years back...he just threw grain at them even though I told him not to. It was literally less then 24 hours from first symptom to her pssing, and in fact, she passed that night I think since I awoke and ran down to her to find her gone the next morning. So sad, and sometimes NOTHING we do can help. ((hugs))

First, I am sorry that you lost this doe kid.

Her low temperature was due to either:
1) Enterotoxemia (the only other low temp problem is Milk Fever)
2) she was shutting down/dying

FYI: Banamine is excellent for respiratory problems. It is also NOT contraindicated when temps are low (in other words, using banamine in this case was a good idea).

Another thing you should do while trying to figure out your diagnosis is to give CD anti-toxin (especially with the low temp). If it is entero, it may save their life. If it is not, it does no harm. If you don't have antitoxin, then give activated charcoal orally.

The B-complex is a MUST - whether polio or listerosis - or just support for enterotoxemia. Thiamine is also a good idea if you have it. Give SubQ as you don't want to introduce anything else into the rumen at this time. If you don't see improvement after your first round of thiamine (when guessing at polio or listo) then you need to also give penicillin (needed for listo).

Anyway, the low temp, the groaning etc - and the quick manifestation really indicates enterotoxemia.

Glad she is at peace now.

Would the entero have caused the head/eye swelling? I assumed the low temp was her shutting down/dying when I found her....that I had found her too late to help her.

Looks like I need to get a list together for Jeffer's. I have tetanus antitoxin but not the cd antitoxin. And good to know about the b-complex they have.

I believe it's concentrated thiamine not concentrated B-complex.
