Unhappy The Dreaded Task of Who to Sell

Money is a little tight and there are a couple of goats I really don't need. I love ALL my goats and don't want to get rid of a single one. However, I am going to have to let go of my wether and one doeling. I know this is what we all have to face once in a while, but I guess my biggest thing is my babies going to a good home. I know this sounds whimpy, but I don't want my boy going somewhere where he will be mistreated or eaten (yes, I will eat my goats when I need to, just not this one). I also don't want them to go to homes where there are alone or to someone who doesn't know much about goats. *SIGH* Maybe selling the next time will be easier, but right now I have a knot in my stomach.

Thats why its so hard to make profits in goats it becomes a hobby more than a business.

This is why I didn't get rid of my nubian doe months ago. Every time I try something new to get her healthy and back up to par, I tell myself that this is the last try, and if it doesn't work she's gone. But I've told myself that at least 4 times now, and she's still here, and I'm still trying. *sigh*

Me and the bf were talking bout this today. If I haaaaaad to sell them I would but my mother take them most likely. It's a hard thing that's for sure and I'm sure if you go with your gut feeling they will go to a great home. What is the doe if you don't mind me asking.

Darn lol... I know nothing bout them so couldn't convince the bf lol. What about "renting" them out? I don't know if they do that by you but its big down here. That way you have control on what happens with them. And you can take them back when thing get better? Just an idea

Rechellef,

I was just pondering about posting the exact issue.

I know I need to let some go, AND I have good buyers who want them, but I just cannot come to a decision, I have put the buyers off for months now...

we just had two sets of twins, two sets of triplets, a set of quads and another doe set to go anyday...I have buyers for most all the babies, but it's the adults I need to let go of...

is there a checklist that folks use when attached to each and every one of them??

I have had to assess each of them when considering who to sell and so far that hasn't helped much....
one throws beautiful multiples easily, but has a meaty udder (half boer), so not our best milker, another has a great udder and gives lot's of milk, but is pita to milk.. another is our "baby" but is not the best mother with babies and milking, and so on with all of them.

These are all our first goats and we fell madly in love with them before we found out how quickly they multiply, we keep building more pens and feed costs keep going up..

wish I could let them pick straws, lol...

I do feel your pain and don't have a solution as am in the same position.

When the potential buyers call, I go more on who happens to be my favorite at the moment, as each has her positives and negatives, but end up putting it off every time, am amazed the buyers are this patient, lol.

I guess we all go through this at one time or another. I'm trying to decide which one of my three milkers I should sell -- one definitely stays because she's my only registered doe. But of the other two...which one to keep and which one to sell?? Thankfully I only have one doe kid this year!

you are not alone! I should sell at least one, but i don't want to. currently I have one that is old, now how can i make her move? poor gal, she'd really suffer if she had to leave, I've had her several years now. and, she's founded, walking is tough, who else is gonna baby her along and realize she deserves a nice rest home? a smarter livestock person would have moved her along.

then that still leaves 4. I had just about put one up for sale, but dang, she's milking sooo well! I did just put my 7 doelings on a trailer, and the last 3 will go within a month.

rather than sell, I found a 'reason' to keep--a coupla bottle calves. now we just have enough extra for the house and feeding the calves very well. once the calves need weaned, I'll save up some winter milk in the freezer, extra cheese, and dry up. I had been selling to 'pet milk' but the ppl are so sporadic as to when they will pick up, its not worth it, and they dont' want to pay much either.

but really, it'd be smarter and easier to sell down to 2, but who?? i just can't!

The VA line isn't too far for me, either. How much are you asking?

I had to drastically cut my herd last year and it was tough. Two does were guaranteed to stay in the herd - my favorite and my daughters. The rest were fair game, and I finally decided based on production and confirmation. It wasn't easy, but they all have good homes and we can visit them. But I did get a bit teary eyed when I sold the herd queen that had helped my then toddler learn to walk on uneven ground.

I have no idea at this time what to ask for her and she needs a couple of months before I can test her for CAE as well. She has beautiful conformation and will be a sizable girl and is showing some good potential in the udder and teat area. Her mom milks about a gallon a day. Here are some pictures of her. Her name is Sparkle and she is 4 months old. I am also attaching a pic of her mom's udder (after milking, so it's looking a little small).

sigh, by the time fuel cost get factored in I could get the same quality 15 miles down the road but I love my saanens, so I will get a few more one day... Creamers saanens Id love to have but your close to her and its the same thing, by the time I pay for fuel dang gas prices.

I love that does teat size, not suitable for most folks but thats my ideal size.

TRUST ME - I understand about fuel costs. Our farm truck LOVES gas!! Even though her momma's teats are small, they are actually surprisingly easy to milk and she milks down nice and butter soft. Her daughter shows more promise in the teat development than mom.

It's always easier for me to sell kids than it is to sell any of my adults, by the time they are grown I am too attached or even buying a baby some place else & then having them a few years I don't want to let them go.
We already decided to keep 1 kid from this springs kids & now dh wants to keep 1 of the nubian doelings.
I do try & make sure they go to good homes, the folks can always call me with any questions & I try to make sure they have what ever info they need & I have told folks "No" plenty of times & not sold a goat to someone if I didn't think they would give them good care or it wouldn't be a good home for them.
I'd rather put them in my freezer than have them mistreated or not taken proper care of some where else.
