Copper problems? ? ? No way. . .

Ok - Just in the last few weeks - my does in milk have started to get red in their black coats.
I have one Nigi doe that came from Atwood Acres in Feb and she has had a bit of red tinge since purchase.

Now. . .

I copper bolus usually every 4th month.

The whole herd was done in April. The coats on everyone (except the two with the barber pole worm load we are NOW dealing with in an effective manner) are very slick and have a great sheen - still. . . they have red in their coats and they are getting more day by day.

They have free choice Onyx Right Now mineral - but I'm not sure how much they use because we use an inbarn free choice feeder and the horses, cow and goats use it - we do go through a bag a month. . .

They are now eating Buckeye Goat feed - I really like how the tag reads, and before that, they were getting Blue Seal Caprine Challenger. . .

Any ideas?

They have city water - no well water access.

Maybe they're just sun bleaching. Every light hair isn't a copper deficiency.

Think its one of those crazy things this year. We are in the same boat, bolus regularly, never had a problem and this year everyone is looking more rust then black. Been going crazy checking minerals, feed, having water tested, etc..... seems to be correcting itself with the summer pasture growth.

There could possibly be an unusually high level of copper antagonist elements; however, you would need to do a hay analysis with complete micronutrient assessment. If it city water, it is unlikely to contain antagonist elements.

isnt one of the signs of overdose the same coat condition as those that need it? I would be checking their eyes to see if you can see copper flecks in the eyes

Mineral deficient coats fade and rust in the sun, it's not really normal. I would wonder about zinc. If you are giving all that copper, they may not be getting the zinc they need with it.

That said, Ithink some animals do naturally have red in their coats. I have a buck that never loses the red in his coat. It's more of a violet red kind of color, he is a black goat.
Also, sometimes it takes 2 or 3 bolusing cycles to really see the results.

I'll do photos - a few also have the bald tail ends. How would I get more zinc in them
