Spin Off of Nehi Mama's Thread
I first read the thread thinking she was asking if you can ID your OWN goats, and I got to thinking. Am I the only one who knows each goat's individual sounds? To others, they think I am insane...I stand on the porch and holler a roll call..."------!" and he gives that goofy high piched "maa", "Smokie!" and he gives the whinier pygmy response, "Annie!" and she is a softer, shorter version of Smokie, and then there is Sammy, the Sheep...his "BAAAA" sounds so rough and coarse, and SO LOUD compared to the others. A sheep has a waaaay different call than the others. Then, there is the Trouble in Paradise call, which helped me ID Annie immediately as the goat in trouble that day, on top of the frantic cries of the others.
Of course, there is the "Make the water stop coming from the sky, our feet are getting wet" call and the "We haven't eaten in 6 weeks, call the SPCA" call. Just like the instinct that picks YOUR crying child from a playground full of kids.
The horses are the same, I can identify a whinny from anywhere in the field.
Are we all crazy???

I am the exact same way, don't worry. People seem suprised when I have names for my goats, let alone ID them by the noises they make... C'mon, 23 goats isn't THAT many. (7 non-permanent members though) I can't identify th butcher kids (5) yet, to be fair. I won't, because I'll spend as little time with them as possible before butchering.

Guilty as well, and I have lots of goats and I know them by voice. That is how I knew it was the mini Mancha crying one night so I trekked out in the dark to find out what was wrong and she had broken IN to the buck pen. So I got her out and have since luted her behind!
There is one kid out there who has the most annoying voice he always sounds hoarse and I know when he was fallen asleep and did not realize the herd got up and went out in the field.
Some know their names well, others not so much.
I yell Mimi, shake a bucket or rattle a bag of animal crackers and they all stampede in from the field. Mimi was a goat I had who always came when called and brought the herd in with her, so even though I sold her snotty butt they still think the word/name Mimi means food

Yes, I can tell who is who by the voice. To me, they're very distinct from one another.

Yuppers. We are crazy. Lemon and Snowbelle will call back to me and (sometimes) come when I call. The three white kids will holler back because they know I have bottles.

Yep. I know each one by their voice. Well, in BigWig's case, he is so quiet and so rarely makes any noise, that if he talks, I go to see who it is. But everyone one else although quiet, have their distinct voices when they talk.

I know most of the voices, and I have close to 50 at the moment (haven't counted lately!). My neighbour is always astounded that I can tell the Saanens apart and call all the goats by name! The older goats know their names, and will respond if they are the vocal types.
I know the sheeps' voices as well.
I just call "Hey goats!" and they usually come running.

I call, "Goats! Goats! Goats!" And then I sing the Goat Song, which sounds remarkably like the Chicken Song that has the funny dance with it, but the words are:
Goaty, goaty, goaty, goat.
Goaty, goaty, goaty, goat.
Goaty, goaty, goaty, goat.
GOAT GOAT GOAT GOAT!
(repeat as necessary)
Crazy? WHO?

Off to find a towel to wipe the water off my computer, Alice. Now, can you describe the hand motions? Would be pooping motion, eating motion, head butting motion then acting like you are dead in the middle of the field.

Yep, I know all my goats by the sound they make & they know their names too when I call or talk to them. I even know the sounds of this springs babies.
We are crazy, everyone of us & I bet our goats all know that too!

Crazy? An outsider reading through this thread would think we're all certifiable! A YouTube video of the goat song is required here Alice.
Of course I can understand my goats when they speak and tell which one it is!

I'm guilty. There are a few that hardly ever speak, so I don't recognize them, but I know all the vocal ones.
