IV Setups?

I've seen many suggestions on this forum to use SubQ IV for a dehydrated goat. I know I could do this, but don't even begin to know what kind of setup to use.

Size of IV needle? Length of IV tubing? Is drips per minute important? What do you all use?

Thanks!

We don't do drips. 60cc syringe, 22 gauge needle. Push enough under the skin over the rib cage to make a fist sized lump. When that lump is almost gone, do another fist sized lump on the other side over the rib cage. On a baby you might not want a fist sized lump, maybe half that.

Sub Q means under the skin. IV means in the vein.

I use a drip on goats that are down.. I use a 30cc syringe (I can't hang on to a goat and push a 60cc.. it's too big for my hands.. so I double stab).., on a goat that is up and moving around... I put the Ringers behind the shoulder blades.. a big lump on each side. Adult goats I do 150cc's on each side. (60cc's or so on each side on wee ones)... repeat as needed (I use Ringers, with a 18 gauge needle for both sub-q & IV drip set-up)..

here's a youtube video on IV set up for sub-q fluids (shows how to set up the bag/needle ect)

this video show the actual placement of needle and actually giving the fluids (it's a cat, but it will give ya an idea! lol)

If you can give subq shots, you can use the IV kit to give Ringers. Really *very* simple. There are two main types of IV kits. The disposable one for bags, and the rubber one for bottles. You can get lactated ringers in either bottle or bag at my vets. I prefer the bag myself.

This one is for bottles and comes with a big needle. By the way, if you have to give CMPK in large amounts, this is the perfect kit for that. It works for the bottles that CMPK comes in. Easier in my opinion than using a 60 cc syringe and stabbing them multiple times. When you've finished using it, you just rinse with alcohol and let dry.

This one is similiar to the one I get from Sally and it works for bags. I can't find the exact one I use pictured online. This one is called "disposable", but I rinse it out with alcohol and re-use it many times, just switching out the needle for a new one. I use an 18 guage needle to give ringers subq.

I give the ringers over the ribs, in front of the shoulder, on the neck. Frankly, whatever I can get to easily. Ringers should be warmed to body temp before use. You do not have to monitor the flow as you do if you are giving something in the vein. And you won't overdose. I give them until the body stops absorbing them rapidly.

It really is nice to have someone show you how to put everything together the first time.
