Unhappy Issues with Hi-Chlor Sanitizing Powder

I saw there was a similar complaint with Hoegger Supply and their sanitizing/cleaning supplies back in April. I ordered just the sanitizer and it came unlabeled and without instructions, which I felt was unprofessional. When I called Hoegger to get the mixing instructions I was emailed a WHOLE lot more than what was mentioned online or in the catalog concerning the sanitizer.

HI-CHLOR SANITIZING POWDER

HAZARDUS TO HUMANS AND DOMESTIC ANIMALS
KEEP OUR OF REACH OF CHILDREN DANGER: CORROSIVE

CAUSES IRREVERSIBLE EYE DAMAGE. MAY BE FATAL IF INHALED. HARMFUL IF SWALLOWED OR ABSORBED THROUGH SKIN. DO NOT GET INTO EYES, ON SKIN OR ON CLOTHING. DO NOT BREATH DUST, VAPOR, OR SPRAY MIST. WEAR GOGGLES, FACE SHIELD OR SAFETY GLASSES. WASH THOROUGHLY WITH SOAP AND WATER AFTER HANDLING. REMOVE CONTAMINATED CLOTHING AND WASH BEFORE REUSE.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE:
DAIRY, BEVERAGE, AND FOOD PROCESSING:
* REMOVE FOOD PARTICLES.
* CLEAN UTENSILS AND EQUIPMENT THOROUGHLY WITH AN APPROPRIATE DETERGENT AND RINSE.
* BEFORE USE, SANITIZE THESE ITEMS WITH 50-100 PPM AVAILABLE CHLORINE SOLUTION (0.5 OZ TO 1 OZ PRODUCT PER 44 GALLONS OF WATER) OF HI-CHLOR SANTIZING POWDER FOR TWO MINUTE EXPLOSURE PERIOD.
* USE IMMERSION, SPRAY OR CIRCULATION TECHNIQUES AS APPROPRIATE TO THE EQUIPMENT.
* ALLOW TO DRAIN THOROUGHLY AND AIR DRY.

1 oz per 44 GALLONS of water? Okay, so providing my math is correct, I would need .0227 oz per 1 gallon of water?? And the 16 oz bag will make 704 gallons??? To top that off, the Hoegger web site states "For maximum sanitizing action, spray your utensils immediately before using" but the directions for use from the manufacturer states "ALLOW TO DRAIN THOROUGHLY AND AIR DRY". Conflicting statements on a substance that may be fatal if inhaled or harmful if swallowed.

I see that Alice allows her utensils to dry after sanitizing. Does anyone else use the sanitizer immediately before milking? What concentration of powder to water do you use? I don't think I would put it in a spray bottle especially after reading the warning statement.

This stuff has me a little more than nervous. Do I need to worry so much? I bought this hoping it would make the sanitizing process simpler. I'm thinking of sending it back if I don't hear from some others and their experience and use with the Hi-Chlor Sanitizer.

Thanks much for your advice.

I have mine mixed in a spray bottle.... I like my spray bottles, they make my life easier. I have an open window right in front of my sink, & a deep sink.... I just stand away, spritz lightly & place in the dish drain.... Doing it like this I don't even smell it while I'm spraying.... I wouldn't put my face near any of it though......it is a chemical afterall....

I do not use right before milking... I wash with detergent, acid wash 3x's per week, rinse, & spray lightly with the chlorine rinse. Allow to fully air dry before using. If for some reason I had to use after to washing/chlorine rinse, I'd rinse the jar with water first...

Thanks Crystal, that does help. I also have a deep sink with a window to the left. How much powder do you use in your spray bottle of water? I'm assuming it is a quart bottle.

The instructions I got from them years ago said 1 teaspoon per gallon. I put it in a qt spraybottle, so I use 1/4 teaspoon per qt. I've used the utensils still damp, but I think air dry would be best.
