How big is a young kid's heart?
A doe of mine had buck/doe twins on 5/28. As I was going out to milk this morning at 10am, her doeling was in her death throes. A little bit of blood came out her mouth.
I had disbudded her on the 4th, at a week old. She was seen playing that night with her brother. Sunday she was out and about, and I was gone sunday night through tuesday afternoon for work and my dad was doing chores, he probably didn't notice anything. I don't recall seeing her out in particular yesterday but it was like 94* and EVERYBODY was lazing around in the barn... so I didn't think anything of it. She was just laying with her brother yesterday.
All organs looked FINE, except for the heart and lungs. Now, I've never butchered a goat with blood still in them (I always have bled them out), but her lungs were purple splotched like there was blood in them. Tissue felt fine, though. Her heart was bigger than I would have imagined. She butchered out to be about the same size as my 12-16 week old Silver Fox rabbits, and I expected a heart about the same size. This heart was way bigger than I expected, but I've never butchered one so young. Probably 3x the size of a similar sized rabbit I would guess.
Right now she's soaking in saltwater in the fridge. Is it OK to still eat her?
