Help sick lamacha Update more ? at end
We have a 1 year old lamancha who started drooling and acting funny yesterday. Goat breeder we got her from thought heat 92 degrees suddenly had been in the 60's cool her off water and fan won't drink so started giving pedialyte by syringe. With dose of power punch. Looking a little better last night This am she won't get up so called vet. He still thinks heat but maybe rabies. Started her on dexamethasone and PCN IM hosing her down still only getting pedialyte through syringe. Temp down to 102.6 She keeps walking into corners just standing. Still strong and pulling like crazy when trying to walk her. Friend came over we gave her 5 cc B complex Im mixed some probiotics in the pedialyte. Talked to vet again because now some facial tremors and leg tremors. She will get a second dose of PCN and dexamethasone tonight. Told me to continue this separate her and call if she dies still thinking rabies Not sure when she would have been exposed. Now eyes are looking redder and she has a bad look still standing in the corner. Any ideas suggestion? I am thinking listeriosis do I need tetracycline? I need to know now while I can still get it tonight. The goat is my dd and she is in Florida right now the herd is named after this goat. Any help and prayers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Annie.

Annie, does she have any wounds anywhere? It sounds a lot like tetenus (I know that's not spelled right, but I just can't get it out!!). It could be a small wound between her toes even. I would try the antitoxin, not the toxoid, NOW. If it is it may be too late, but it's worth a try. Hopefully someone else has a better idea. Good luck.

I'm thinking possible Meningeal worm. It can get in the brain and also the spinal cord causing neurological problems. Maybe call Vicki McGaugh. Look up her website Lonesome Doe Nubians and her phone number is there. It sounds really serious.

5cc of Vit B is no where near enough... A standard size goat takes about 30cc per side. If she does not get better after the B then I think Tetnus or the Meningeal Worm is a good prospect... But it does not sound like Polio, but you could rule it out.

I have the tetanus antitoxin but now she is looking slightly better. Sucked out the pedialyte from the syringe just looks slightly better. I just gave second dose of meds and she moved so it felt like scrapping bone (only 1/2 in needle) pulled back a little and gave meds. She is limping a bit on that leg. Should I still give her the anti-toxin will that be too much if Tetanus is not the problem??? She had CDT 6-7 weeks ago. Thank you for the help Annie

The antitoxin will not hurt her even though she is up to date on her CD & T. I would give her 20cc SQ, it surely won't hurt her.
Sure hope she's going to be OK! I'll keep my fingers crossed for both of you!

WAIT~! Bakcfourty must have a typo. I think she means 2 cc (not 20)

Her symptoms sound very much like a herd bull that acquired rabies when I worked at a vet clinic. Please be very careful, use gloves when working around her. Any little cut/tear/hangnail can allow the rabies virus to enter your system, and rabies shots are no fun.Probably not, but better safe than sorry. You're in my prayers

Go over this thread. http://www.dairygoatinfo.com/index.php?topic=15902.0 The second post mentions dripping saliva and the color of membranes. Could your goat have pneumonia? Listerosis is a circling symptom so is she circling? A strong antibiotic probably would be best to give like Naxcel from the vet. Trembling may be pain so Banamine would be good.

Just a mention on rabies....it is sooo serious. If she has it then you need shots. Gloves or not at this point. BUT...the vet I work with just went through the shots and she said they wern't bad a t all...just a pain in her schedule.

No really the AntiToxin is 20 cc for an adult goat. I know it sounds like too much & that's what I thought when someone told me too, But last year when my 2 girls got into the bush that made them sick I gave them each 20cc SQ. My vet had told me that much before & also here as well.
This is not the toxoid like for their yearly booster but the ANTITOXIN.

Ack! I'm sorry...no typo and you are right.
When I saw the 20cc I thought that sounded like so much. So I checked the dosage on Hoegers but failed to read the entire paragraph where it then says 10-30 cc for treatment. Always learning here...no wonder it comes in such a big bottle. Thanks Katie!

That's what I'm thinking, too. Sounds like the one we had with it. The only missing symptom is high temperature, but maybe this is in very early stages. Even Pen-G would help if that's what it is. Check her temperature again.

Looked better last night even at 4 am when dd got up and feed her via syringe This AM she looks terrible again. Just gave her her meds and more fluid will go out with more soon. Unfortunately if it is rabies other goats and most of the family have been exposed. Ugh!! We are supposed to have company this weekend maybe we should cancel... She was alert looking around almost acting normal at 4 I didn't give her the tetanus antitoxin last night I don't think the vial has 20cc in it. The vial is 1500units. She is not circling but will walk rather briskly in one direction then stops when reaches something This morning she is at least changing directions. Still drooling which was better too. Can swallow last night she was even licking her lips . Eyes are red again today better last night. Can I give Vit B sub q? Just gave her PCN and Dexamethasone that way. Thinking about calling another vet... I just want to cry!!!! Annie

Please, please, please be careful with possible rabies.
Seriously consider you and any exposed family member getting shots. It will be much better safe than sorry!
If she doesn't make it, please have her checked for rabies. Honestly, if it were me, if the second vet suspects rabies, I would consider putting her down and having her tested. It's just really not worth the risk of contracting rabies yourself or your family. I'm actually rather surprised that a vet would leave a suspected rabid animal on the farm, thought there would have been a protocol for that. And I know when we have a special animal that we love it's hard to make, if not simply consider, such decisions. People safety first.
Here's hoping the second vet has a better prognosis and a treatment plan to back it. It's a terrible situation.

After some pedialyte she perked up a bit responding to her name. Just gave her some more with a probiotic added. Yesterday she was doing better after lots of fluids. We have frozen colustrum and fresh goat milk can we give her some of that to help boost her? Also will rabies symptoms wax and wane like this? Thanks Annie
