Angry Ugh.....Wasted Milk.

SIL & one of her friends came over today with their kids borrow my oven (hers is broke & they needed to make cupcakes for a bday party)

I was in and out of the house getting work done outside. Told them they could give the kids a snack....cookies & milk. Milk in the 1/2 gallon jars is pasteurized for bottle kids, the milk in the bottom of the fridge in rectangular pitchers is filtered & is for people use...

About 30 minutes later they ask if I have stuff to make Kool-Aid, their kids are thirsty & don't like tap water. Told them I could make tea, or if the kids wanted it now they could have more milk or chocolate milk...

They didn't give the kids milk....the reason??

"Oh, we were going to give them milk but when I opened it, it was covered in SLIME, so I DUMPED THAT PITCHER in the sink & checked the other one.....That one had slime so I DUMPED IT TOO......saved you some of the slime though so you could see it.....Aren't you happy I checked it....the kids could have drank that!!"

I take a deep breath, check the "slime"....yup, just as I expected...CREAM that had rose to the top

Two whole pitchers of milk, perfectly good milk down the drain, wasted....didn't even go to my chickens....just senseless waste. I remember why I don't socialize much...

I did keep my cool though, explained that it was just cream, no need to worry.....Afterall, I can't assume everyone knows what cream on milk looks like & was willing to forgive until this..

"Well that's just nasty if you drink that, can't believe you let your kids drink that.....You should just buy milk that way you don't have to worry about nasty slime.....aren't you worried about your children getting sick or catching some disease from your goats?!?"

I politely told her to mind her own business, don't speak of things she knows nothing about and asked them to wash the dishes they used to bake with, asked that she at least rinse the pitchers she dumped & went back outside to work.....

SIL knew I was furious, she came out and apologized for her friend & offered to replace the milk.....Told her thanks but I'd have more milk this evening.

I may have got upset for no reason....but no way would I dump the contents of someone's fridge without asking....nor would I be insulting & make assumptions.........perhaps if her tone wouldn't have been so snobby I would have let it slide as ignorance but my gosh she ticked me off!!

On a positive note.... when I'm mad, I sure can clean!! The boys pen is raked so spotless I bet you could count the goat berries left on the ground on one hand!

Oh.
My.
Gosh!

What nerve! Nevermind the ignorance-the NERVE!

And complete lack of home training. *WHO* throws out food that belongs to someone else? In their own home, from *their* fridge?

I think you handled it well. I would have thrown her after giving her an earful.

Sorry about your slimey milk being gone. I'd share if I were closer. We have some slimey milk here, too!

Wow. What a rude person. You do them a favor and they behave like that? At least your SIL apologized and didn't lecture you but her friend? Would never darken my door again.
I can't believe they wouldn't have thought to ASK you before dumping all that milk!

Those of us that know better love to see that SLIME. Yum yum yum. My mom was here a few days ago and asked if we had enough goat milk for her to have some, she misses having goats and their milk. When I handed her the pitcher she said, "Oh my, look at all that cream. Your girls do make some good milk."

SLIME ftw!

I skim the slime off every morning, and make butter once a week that looks like old fashioned lard! He-he! How appetizing!

Most people don't know where real food comes from, and weren't taught manners either! I'm sure she knows more about both now.

I couldn't agree more with this! I LOVE the cream off the top. Milk just isn't milk without the cream. lol

I love my "slimy" milk !!! The more "slime" the better. In fact, I love to skim some of that stuff off in the morning for my coffee - YUM!

I would have politely directed her to realmilk.com so she could read the REAL facts on raw milk vs. pasteurized.

Shannon.....Sooo many things went through my mind & thankfully did not exit my mouth....Kids were present afterall.

I'm still unsure why she saved some "slime" for me to see, but didn't just save the milk and have me look at it???

We had *planned* on making pudding tonight & milkshakes...... My kids are furious....my DS, 8 asked why a grown up would do something so stupid... lol

Nope, no go there....she's an RN & firmly against raw milk.....she even buys pasteurized eggs..... I didn't even know there was a such thing as pasteurized eggs...

She wouldn't even let her kids go with mine & my nieces to take the goats treats because "goats spread diseases"...

When they got here I offered to make bottles for the 3 bottle bucks & told her the kids could take turns feeding them through the fence (not in the pen just in case the boys started rough housing) & she panicked and had then go inside to watch TV....Wouldn't even let them hold the new chicks.....felt bad because my kids & nieces would ask me to hold them & I'd get a few out...then they would run inside to tell my SIL all about it...

Poor kids..... I guess Kool Aid is better than raw milk & TV is better than holding new chicks, feeding goats treats or bottle feeding a goat

To each their own, but she won't be invited back out.

Make her go find you some expensive raw milk from another source to replace yours so she could see how much it costs to buy. Then send her to my house to let her milk my evil witchy kicky goat so she can see how much work it takes just to milk. Even without the cleaning and hoof trimming vaccinating and all the other stuff to do I think she might learn something, as well as get a milk bath from milking my girl. Of course I might not want such a person to touch even my ill mannered doe. Sorry about the rudeness of your sil guest. Why on earth would they come over to use your oven anyway. I would never go to someone elses house to bake unless it involved them.

I feel bad for her kids. Being a germaphobe and afraid of new experiances does a diservice to those poor kids.
I say this as my kids are hunting lizards on the front yard under the rocks. Ya know they carry disease

LOL No kidding.....my husband picked up Clostridium Difficile from a hospital...nearly killed him, he was sick for 4 months......I keep my animals clean & healthy, pens clean & I don't think for one minute her kids would have got sick..... I think her kids would have had a blast actually....

I felt bad for them, they were really interested in the animals, but could only look, not touch Her kids are 8 & 11.

As for baking here....my SIL's oven broke after they had already made the batter and such, she called & asked to bring her friend & use mine since they couldn't use her friend's because her friend's husband was having a poker game with guys from work & they couldn't go there...

Seemed weird to me, but I wasn't using my oven so I didn't mind...

Just didn't think all my milk would go down the drain in return for loaning my oven...

I would've asked her to leave my house immediately and explained that she poured down perfectly good milk with cream down the sink and said it was very rude and that you wouldn't do that kind of thing (rummaging and dumping food at a stranger's house)....

well at least you know that your kids will grow up being happy, and well rounded not to mention ready to try new ...even germy things... In my book that makes for a pretty good kid. I hope hers will learn some manners and rebel by moving to a farm, perhaps it will open her mind some. Again ewwww

Well, *I* thought I handled this well....especially since I'm known to be a hot head...But it apparently has turned into something far bigger..

This woman is now posting on FB about the dangers on home raised food without the benefit of inspection & regulation....then proceeded to talk about the "slime"... I sent her a detailed, as polite as possible message to provide information on the "slime"...she deleted me from FB.

So now my SIL (not the one who came today) has flooded her page with all the info.....As well as a detailed account of her rude behavior when someone was doing her a FAVOR & invited her into their home...

My son went to the fridge to get milk tonight....asked where it was (this evenings milking was chilling). I told him what happened and he was outraged....He wanted to know what was wrong with her & "the top of the milk is the best part!" lol

Also found out in our chat that he was sneaky....He snuck one of the cochin chicks inside, gave it to the 8 year old, who snuck it in the bathroom to hold it, chick was then transfered to the 11 year old & all of it repeated.... I shouldn't laugh but my son said the kids were watching them hold the chicks through the window & it made him sad....He also noted that he picked a tiny chick & even made sure it had no poop on its feet since the mom was worried about germs......lol

The 11 year old has FB, posted this evening about seeing goats & chicks...was going to ask dad for just 2 chicks.....I'm sure his mother's paranoia won't let that happen...

Sad I think....my kids don't have an ipod touch like hers....nor are they enrolled in every extracurricular activity imaginable......but watching my kids feed the chicks this evening, & watching my DD miss the milk jar every other squirt tonight while milking made me happy..... I couldn't imagine bubble wrapping them in complete ignorance...

I honestly never, ever thought cream on milk would start such a fuss....

Guess the lesson learned from this is "Don't allow strangers to borrow your oven, even if another family member brings them over"

This is just crazy, and getting crazier! Some of my family like it, some don't. but no one would come to my house and dump my milk without asking!

you know, I wonder if she knew what she was doing. I know someone (not naming names cause with my luck I'd get caught out and start a fight - public internet and all that) who would do that - only (s)he would know exactly what (s)he was doing and (s)he would be lying about thinking it was "slime". (S)he would feel justified because (s)he was "protecting" my kids.

If I were your sil, this woman would no longer be welcome in MY home either!
