Castration-Banding v.brazzido v.surgical

Ok I realize this topic has been debated before, but. I need to castrate my buckling very soon I watched the You -Tube videos on surgical & the braziddo (sp?). Both of these looked very traumatic to the kids. I have access to a bander, I also have a large bottle of Bananine. To me it just seems more humane to use the bander.

The buckling is about 7-8 weeks old & his “jewelry” is about the size of a small peach seed. He will either be sold as a wether or butchered. I don’t have a secondary place to hold him or I may just leave him intact if we slaughtered him.

I just want to do what’s best for him & with the least amount of agony. I like to consider myself stonecold to somethings when it comes to blood & gore, kinda goes with my profession, but the screaming I heard in those videos was terrible.

Can you link to the videos? Surgical should not be traumatic if done young and the person knows what they are doing! At 7-8 weeks old though...anything is going to be traumatic. I would just leave him intact and eat him pretty soon.

I would do him soon - I am all about what is most humane and could careless what other people say. . .I banded - gave 1/2 cc banamine prior - about 30 min before - my buckling did not even flinch and never acted like - then or anytime after - that he was in even mild discomfort. I'd band again without a second thought. My buckling was 8 weeks old. I mean not a second of obvious pain - I was shocked.
I watched a surgical castration yesterday on a young donkey - It was awful. Ekkk.

Well i feel better so far if you banded one @ 8 weeks. Our other wether was banded as well which my neighbor did then he gave him to my daughter a few days later.
I just think banding seem so less traumatic. I could be wrong!

I surgical did my two twins at 6 days old and they made more noise holding them than they did for the surgey. I let them down and they were playing just like nothing happened.

we use no other method except banding... I've banded bucklings up to 12weeks with no issues.. on the bigger boys, I like to use three people. I'll have the human kids, stand facing each other, holding onto the goat kid... (each will have a front leg & a good hold on a back leg) at about chest height..that leaves his *manly part* dangling nicely.. I then come up from behind and have easy access and both of my hands to work with... takes only a couple seconds. (I'm a softie and usally give them a little banamine before we let them go)

susie, mo ozarks

Can't tell you how many boys we've banded here that have run screaming their poor brains out! It is SO PAINFUL for them!!
The only reason ours cried from surgical was from being restrained, we know how much goats HATE to be held down. Try just holding a baby goat down, make it hold still for several minutes with out letting it move, and see how much it screams bloody murder!!

I would like to see the video as well...
I know too although I am new to surgical the sooner you do it the better...

Surgical should only be done one week old or less. I band at seven to eight weeks and if one has banamine that is all the better.

If we have any that need to be wethered I usually Band them between 4 & 6 weeks of age but I think most folks wait a few weeks longer so your little guy should be fine.
