CL question
I just helped a friend lance and clean an abscess on her goat. Older doe, 7 or 8, never had an abscess before. It was located at spot 2 on the lower picture on this website http://www.tennesseemeatgoats.com/ar...hadenitis.html
The abscess was a tiny hard lump for months(like a bug bite that didn't go away), then swelled right before kidding. Smaller then a quarter when we lanced it.
Exudate was thick and smooth, like gel toothpaste, yellowy green in color, no strong smell to it.
None of this screams CL at me, and we took all precautions, I held her down with a feed bag under her head, my friend wore gloves and lanced it, cleaned it out with iodine, burned everything after, washed our hands with a strong solution of bleach.But...
...just how paranoid should I be here?

If it was CL, you did everything right. If it wasn't CL, you still did everything right. I wouldn't worry about it.

I had a buck I bought for some one else that had this happen, it was a simple staph infection. Did you collect any extrude? Google images for CL abscess it shows the extrude. I personally think it sounds more like a none cl abscess but until you test you cant be certain.
I simply took a syringe and needle and drew the puss out and then put it in a red top tube and sent it off.

I wouldn't be super paranoid. You did everything safely. If a lump comes back, I would consider getting rid of the doe at a meat only sale. I would pasteurize any milk from her too just to be safe.
People in this area aren't that hyper about the disease because it is so widespread. They just clean the abscess and go on. I've never purchased a doe with a lump nor milked one with a lump, but I see them often at shows and sales. They seem to be particularly widespread in the boer raising herds.

You did everything right, as long as you tested the pus. You will NEVER know for sure unless you test it. Pus testing is VERY accurate, and it isn't that expensive.

Well, not my goat so I've got no say on testing or anything. I just don't want to bring it home to my guys.
This friend is my pet sitter and I am hers. I may be sitting for her mini-herd in the next month, milking 3 does twice a day, a couple of bottle babies and feeding. Generally I just wash well and spray bleach on my shoes (I am forever spraying bleach on my shoes after going anywhere) but I may just be ultra paranoid and keep a set of clothes in a bag in the car for chores there.
I'm not planning on going anywhere for a looong time so bio-security the other way isn't an issue, and she's great about it anyway.

Bleach is very good for white running shoes.
You did everything right.

Regardless if the desease is likely or not, I would always take it very seriously. CL is very contagious not only to your goats but to humans as well. If your animals get it you will be banned from having animals on that land again for 50 years. It gets in the soil. So yes thank you for being cautious

Excuse me? Who told you THAT?
A radical mis-statement like that starts rumors and misinformation running rampant on the Internet. Best that you delete that post.

I have never heard of this either. It isn't even a reportable disease, and vets simply clean the abscess, they do not cull an animal with CL.
A couple of links--
http://www.aces.edu/pubs/docs/U/UNP-0085/
And in this link read page 713.
http://www.clgoatcare.org/1986_goat_...ence_study.pdf
In two separate studies they found that it only lasted for up to 1wk in the environment. Nothing near fifty years. In fact in one of these studies it only lasted 24hours. It was all dead with in a week in both studies of Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis which is what the bacteria itself is called that causes the disease Caseous Lymphadenitis.
Good people worry and walk in unbelievable fear about this anyway. In fact, too much fear. Don't make it worse by saying they are going to take away all animals and quarantine land for decades. That is simply not true.

I'll take note of that. I'll also NEVER EVER buy a goat from you!

Robin is trying to sarcastically make the note that being afraid of CL is ludicrous, and that people overreact to it.
Robin might still be steaming a bit over the CAE thread.

Wow....interesting. Ummm, Robin, you do realize that the rules of this forum are "Be Nice". We're all subject to them. Chuck deleted one of my posts recently because I stepped over the line.
That didn't sound like a very nice post.

I was asking a question because of the wildly wrong information that was posted.

Just imagine if they were in the udder and burst into the milk.
For me, the only logical response to CL is putting the animal down and disposing of the body away from the goat yard/pasture.
