Donated a milking doe

to Team Alex Benefit Auction. It is for a local girl whose horse died while she was riding it. She hit her head in the fall & was in a coma for weeks. She is now conscious and making amazing progress, but is in a head trauma hospital for an undetermined length of time.

They are getting some very cool donations of animals, farm equipment, furniture, wedding dresses, cookware and other things for this auction. If you are in Eastern KS or Western MO it would be worthwhile to check it out. It will be held May 1 at 1:30 at the Mound City, KS Fairgrounds.

Did you donate Flower or were you able sell her?

No, Flower is still available, but I figured the auction atmosphere would spook her too much.

It was Olive . She has one of the best udders of all my girls, is giving a gallon a day & doing good on the stand - unless I don't get finished quick enough (since I have two on the stand, sometimes they finish their grain before both are milked) & then she starts dancing & spills the bucket. Everyone else stands still whether I finish first or they do and I just needed to reduce. Since she is the hardest to deal with on the stand, she was the winner. I don't think the auction atmosphere will bother her too much. She is a pretty confident girl.

WOW - I commend you for doing that for the girl and her family!!! If I were close, I too would donate some things for the auction. I had a horse accident that almost killed me too (my skull was shattered and there was 18 hours of surgery and lost sight in one eye - it was a mess), so I feel for the family.

from me & my dd 'cause we don't know what to say, thank-you for sharing.

It really has been a mess for them, too. I don't think Alex's dad has gone back to work since the accident. They are all living at the hospital where she is...

I wish I was closer and had something to donate. How terrible for the family and the girl.

I pray you get a good price for Olive. It would be heartbreaking if someone who didn't realize her value got her too low. I tend to give money or inanimate objects for donations because I worry too much about living things going to an unfit home. I pray this goes perfectly for all involved and the family in need.

Thanks! We are good friends with the auctioneer & his wife. They told me that there are going to be lots of 4H people there. I had toyed with the idea for awhile, but was worried about the same thing. I really hope a 4H family gets her. The auctioneer's wife felt that she should be okay.

Olive is one of my three best does. I would have kept her, except I have her dam & now (since I have a great new jr. herdsire) I am retaining her daughter. I need to reduce my milking does and I hoped that giving such an excellent doe would help them sell her for a good amount.
