Morbid question-graffic

yesterday when I came home I noticed a red kid lying in the pasture, send my son out while I secured the two human babies. I dont believe this kid could have been dead long, she wasnt even stiff and the mom was still hanging around her. The eyes looked dry but she really didnt present a reason for her death off hand. However she had maggots teeny tiny ones coming from her ear and also where on the front hoof, I expect that on a smelly one that has been dead for a couple of days. I checked the mom the night before and she still looked pregnant that morning, however I threw feed and ran.
Is it possible for maggots to appear within the 8 hours I was gone? The kid was very clean so mom did a good job with that, Im just hoping that some how things didnt get developed in the dam, I dont see anything abnormal but kinda puzzled.

Oh and the kicker, after having all bucklings it was a very nice looking doeling

What I read is it's 8-20 hours that the maggots can appear. I would have guessed they can appear even faster than that.
I'm sorry you lost your doeling

I wonder if your having really warm humid temp's if maggots could appear faster maybe?

Did the Cydectin get to you yet?

Maggots boggle my mind. Every summer we treat infestations on dogs at the vet clinic. We get everything shaved off and cleaned up and a little while later there are more showing up. It's hard to get all the eggs and they just keep hatching! ugh. I hate those cases. We even had a dog die from maggots.

rigor mortis wears off in time. My guess is that she was dead long enough for the maggots to hatch.

A single kid could have the doe still looking pregnant, or as pregnant as she did before.

chamoisee is right, 1st rigor wears off and it takes a while for second rigor to set in. Add in a warm climate, and she may have just SEEMED freshly dead. Especially if she had been laying in the sun shine.

So sorry you lost your doeling.

Yes, I got the cydectin, thank you so much I meant to email you yesterday but I had one of those days I dont think a single thing went right. Today Im feeling better than I have in a few months so Im cleaning house today, my kids have been slackers and doing the minumum so its been a catch up day. Do you know how much sweepings I found under the rug that was tucked up under the hutch we put in front of a door during winter it was gross, my daughter better be glad shes gone for the weekend.

Im wondering as a though, she had this kid 3 days after I gave the cydectin would that have effected the kid you think or just a run of bad luck? I have a doe due any time now so Im nervous.

I read that they can hatch in 6 hours. She was cleaned well but did you notice if it looked like she had even moved? She may have been born dead I'm sorry for your and the doe's loss.

she looked like she was curled up sleeping. Her eyes where already dried out. she seemed full term, I didnt have a bred date on her but knew it could be just anytime. We had a really bad storm the night before I wonder if she drowned or mom left and she wasnt strong enough to follow yet. Yesterday mom was laying under my husbandry stand which is a taller milk stand and the kid was about 10 foot from there I checked on her and it seemed she was just laying in the shade.

Cydectin is safe for pregnant does' so I don't think that was it. Also that's what I use when they kid so if your thinking it got through the milk & to the kid, I don't think that would kill her either.
I wish I knew what could have happened.

I don't give it to preggo does, but I don't think it would kill a kid- how sad all around though!
