Which breed of goat?

Hello,
I'm wanting to get goats (for the 1st time) and I'm reading much information about them so I can know what I'm doing but I'm not sure which breed to get.
Can I get some suggestions?
I'm looking for goats mainly for milking and meat. Is there a goat that doesn't have to be milked everyday?
Also, would a calf hut make a good shelter for them?
Any good books you would suggest that I check into?
Thanks so much,
Joe

Sure! We're all happy to tell you what we breed and what our favorites are. I'd suggest either an Alpine, or a Mini-Nubian, because they are what I have and I love them.

All boy goats are delicious, no matter what the breed, as long as they are raised well and slaughtered right.

There is no breed of DAIRY goat, cow, sheep, yak or horse (yes, there are DAIRY breeds of all those animals!) that does not have to be milked every day if you want them to stay in milk.

Calf huts make fine shelters. Now, before you ask any more questions, go here:

http://www.fiascofarm.com/goats/index.htm

Read all of it. Then, if you have a question that site does not answer, come back to us and ask.

Welcome to learning all about goats! They are fun!

You do need to milk every day but you can do it just once a day. For meat and milk both you might want to go with a dairy doe and a boer buck then the babies will be meatier.
