craigslist ad (doe with MILK JAW???)
okay.. the other day there was a post (can't find in now.. but I think it was the same folks.. that doe had this *MILK JAW* issues on BOTH cheeks.. meant to post it, but it was gone.. but here's a new listing.. this time it's a doe in milk...
I have nubians.. and yes, once in a great while.. a really big, strong suck, bottle baby will get a small swelling down on their throat.. we just call it milk neck.-for lack of a REAL term-. it goes away at weaning (I freaked the first time I saw it.. seems to be a *nubian* thing LOL)... BUT.. the LUMP.. in this ad.. AIN'T nothing like the small swellings I've seen... afraid, I wouldn't want to drink this poor doe's milk...
SO??? am I just stupid and never heard of MILK JAW??? (maybe a *local, ozark type name??) Isn't this CL that hasn't ruptured??? (I'm very CL freaky.. I've never actually SEEN it! Never been to an auction.. totally avoid being around any goats except herds that belong to close friends (who I know are CL free) --the doe in the picture the other day.. her MILK JAW LUMPS were much larger then this.. looked ready to POP.
here's the ad

LOL... I've been sitting here trying to google this mysterious MILK JAW... I was pretty sure it was simply CL... but then I thought maybe there's some horrid goat jaw issue, I've never heard of...

I know "milk neck" or "milk goiter" on nursing kids.
I know "bottle jaw" on a goat with severe parasite infection.
Haven't heard of "milk jaw" but I'm guessing it's just a mix up of the names. Since this is an adult, it's either bottle Jaw or CL (best guesses at least). I think bottle jaw is always on both sides though and more 'under' the jaw.
So...probably CL.
Oh yeah, just remember about salivary abscesses. I think that's actually in the exact spot for that. No experience with them so not sure...plus the blurry photo. Poor gal.

That poor goat in in bad condition. Could very well be a salivary cyst. It's the location for one.

Yup. Salivary cyst. CL would be more under the ear.

so... if it's salivary cyst... why would more then one of her goats have it?... the one she had for sale last week.. the lumps were between baseball & softball sized.. one on each jaw.. maybe just back towards the ears, a little bit more.. we've had a couple of cheek abcesses over the years.. but they were closer to the mouth (from them biting the inside of their jaw) and MUCH, MUCH smaller.. I just found the term MILK JAW.. odd (and at least new, to me)

Maybe they're feeding some very coarse hay? That sort of abscess can also be caused by a splinter working through into the cheek.
Back towards the ears is much more likely to be CL.

I saw this earlier and emailed her. I thought it might be a cheek or tooth abscess. She said the guy she bought her from said it was "milk jaw" that he had taken her to a vet. Could be salivary but would think it would be lower?

Did you see the ad for the solid brown doe.?. it was within the last week.. I seriously think it's the same people (or someone in the same area.. just can't remember the town .. I did a search, but couldn't find it again).. it was a doe standing up on a fence.. looking at the camera with a huge lump on each side of her face.. they called that MILK JAW too.. guess if they are feeding something pokey or full of stickers.. (surely a vet wouldn't be calling that MILK JAW.. at least I hope not!.. but hey it is the Ozarks.. and we do have some interesting sayings LOL)

I just wanted to say that I certainly wouldn't buy it. I wouldn't pay $150 for that goat. Twenty-five maybe, but nothing near or over $100. Just a piece of advice.
I've seen people give them Vit C tabs, and have those swellings go away. I've never tried it myself, but I do know some people do it.

I don't care if they are calling it milk jaw, bottle jaw, milk neck or whatever....
That doe has a CL cyst.
Maybe the blurry photo is on purpose, but I can tell that lump has lost hair, and that is a sure sign of CL. If it is the same people that sold another lumpy goat, then they are selling off their diseased herd.
That goat isn't even worth slaughter prices. CL lumps often mean a condemned carcass.

Other abscesses will lose hair before rupturing, not just CL. While CL is possible, it's an odd spot for it.

~shrugs~ The doe I had to put down last year had her cysts in a completely ABNORMAL spot for CL. Didn't make it less CL.
A rounded lump like that, obviously stark, and loosing hair.....
... ~smiles sadly~ Welcome to test it, I have $100 says it is CL.

I did not find anything called milk jaw either when I googled it, this thread did come up though
Me personally that would scare the crap out of me and I would not even set foot near that goat.
Poor thing does not look in good condition even without the lump. She is on the thin side and her coat looks rough.
She bought this doe from someone looking like that? She already wants to sell her? Seems odd.

Ok, that person that posted that is the one who sold me my NDs. Now I'm worried that there is something wrong with them! She also was selling a nubian doe(6mths old) today for 35.00.
Yarrow-I've looked at your website-a mutual friend told me to look at it-and it was wonderful! Mona was the friend, she goes by Rocky something Farm on here can't remember the name of it lol
