WOW! Goat's Milk on CL
I was doing my twice-daily Farm & Garden check on CL and saw this ad:
<<I have a limited supply of raw goat milk available. My nubian doe gives about a quart a day.
This is unpasturized, straight from the goat, chilled immediately, milk. By law, I can only sell it as "pet grade," but my family drinks it and makes wonderful yogurt and cheeses with it.
$3.50 a quart - you bring your own jar. It's possible I could deliver as well.
Robyn >>
$3.50/quart?! Most people around here sell it for $6/gallon. Raw cow's milk goes for $5 - 8.25/gallon. What do people charge in your area?

Low end is $2/ gallon here. That is true "pet quality". I think it is $8/ gallon when it is not pet quality.

WOW! Isn't that funny - how different things are depending on where you live. Other than that one on CL I haven't seen it higher than $6/gallon anywhere here...but a search on CL in the valley shows it higher.

The only gal I know who sells it here sells it for $7/gallon, so I do not know what the comparison is as she is the only one I know. She milks a medium size herd of LaMachas. I am not biased, but I do think my does' milk tastes better, but it may because I put my milk only in glass and she sells hers in plastic milk jugs. There is one person at the grocery store I shop at who is interested and once I get my FF into milk next week, I plan on offering 1/2 gallon for $4 and will give him a discount if he brings my 1/2 gallon mason jar back
Each state is different, but here in TN if you label it "not for human consumption", then you can sell it.

Where I was before (KC area) I had a lady buy 1/2 a gallon a week for 3 dollars, she used her own glass container, and she always bought at least 2 dozen eggs from me same time. Think the going rate in that area is 6-8 dollars a gallon. I only delivered to her once and payed me 2 dollars more that time.

Well, you can plainly see that prices depends ENTIRELY on what state you live in.
In states where "from the farm" sales are legal, milk is cheaper.
In states where it isn't, it is more expensive.
Here in Texas, "from the farm" sales are *technically* legal. However, if you read the fine print, you will find they are legal only if you have a licensed, Grade A dairy.
The difference between technical and actual.

Don't ya just love that? I so wish I could legally sell milk from my farm.
I sold one gallon last week to one of the vet techs I know and she paid me with a new bag of Standlee Alfalfa pellets, and provided her own containers. To stay out of trouble I put blue food coloring in it and put "for pet use" on the jug....which if I remember correctly, I think in Texas, milk for pet use is legal as long as it's dyed blue.....She came out here to pick it up, so I don't think I did too bad on the deal. She has a 1 week old orphaned French Bulldog she's bottle feeding so it really was for pet use.
And a Nubian only milking 1 quart per day is sad. I was getting 2 quarts per day from 'Brina with twins nursing her 24/7.

Two weeks ago someone in my area had an ad on CL for goats milk at 1.00 a quart but you had to come and milk the goat! I couldn't believe it. My goats would freak if a stranger came to do that to them, not knowing how to milk, pinching, milking too high, ect.
I've sold milk for 12.00 a gallon or 10.00 for 2 gallons or more.

Nope, you aren't out of trouble. You can sell "pet milk", dyed with a *special* blue dye that makes the milk taste nasty even to pets from the farm if, and only if, you have a special license from the Ag. Extension.
You cannot sell any milk at all in this state without SOME sort of permit, license, agreement, etc. In fact, you cannot barter, trade or even give it away legally without those permits and licenses in Texas.
Which is why I am seriously considering land in Oklahoma.

You can sell it off the farm in Kansas. You just can't advertise it.
