HELP!! Friend's goat in labor -

the head is sticking out, no legs in sight. My friend got home & found the goat like this. They tried to push the head back in and get a leg, but can't.

They don't have any oxytocin. Not sure what they might have.

Wash, lube, lube around shoulders. You should be able to get fingers in around neck/shoulders to try to get a leg. If not, GENTLY grasp head (don't choke kid) and exert slight pull out AND DOWN.

Slant the does hind end up hill then position. A board propped up on something? Babies may slide back in to be able to position. I read this but havn't had experience with it. Try not to pull kids out it can damage the cervix.

They got ahold of the wonderful vet in Nevada MO (putting in a plug for this guy) and he is on his way out to them.

My friend's husband put his hand way in and can't get ahold of the legs.

I know the goat has been in labor for more than an hour - it has been an hour since she called me. I will call her back with these suggestions.

THANK YOU!!!!!

Same thing happened to me a few days ago, I was able to slide my hand down the neck/shoulder and find a leg..... I pulled when she had a contraction and baby slid out.
Good luck

Any more news? I had given up on the poor kid thought for sure it would have been dead by then. Glad it was looking better.

Thank Goodness the vet could get right out there so there was a good outcome instead of the worst! How many kids did your friends goat end up having? Momma & babies are doing good I hope?
You'll have to have her join our wonderful forum here.

Sorry this has taken so long to post. I finally called my friend back about 10 last night & then we just got back from church.

The baby was a doeling. The Wonderful Vet got her out. Doeling weighed 10# and had a huge head. By the time WV got there (he probably drove 30-45 minutes one way), the baby had had her head out for 3 hours, minimum. WV and my friend were sure he was driving out there just to save the momma, that the baby was beyond saving.

Even if they had managed to get the doeling out by themselves, it was a good thing they called WV. There was a bigger buckling behind the doeling. That poor guy was a tangled mess and WV had to go in with an ob chain? (not sure I got the terminology right). My friend & her husband said there was no way they could have gotten that buckling out - he was all tangled and enormous. The buckling was dead - it was too long inside behind his sister - but it could have been a whole lot worse.

This morning momma and doeling are doing well. Baby is in the house & wants to run around, but the weather here is too horrible so my friend is keeping the girl inside until Wednesday, when it is in the 70s again. (Weather in KS will always keep you guessing). Momma isn't eating a lot, she is getting calcium drenches and eating hay. Mostly just laying next to the hay bin & chewing her cud. Moving around okay, but looking very stiff.

One side note, this vet had never seen my friends before. They called his emergency number and told him that we had suggested they call him. Before we lost Violet, we had never seen him before. He met us at the office on a Sunday afternoon. He didn't need to do any of this for us or our friends - we were not, at that time, his clients. We are now, though. We have been since Violet. After last night, my friend is now one of his clients. WV saved that goat and her doeling. This is my friend's 12yo daughter's goat. The 12yo bought this goat with her own money. When I first talked to my friend last night, her daughter was in her room crying her eyes out because she thought her goat was going to die. It definitely makes a difference having a good vet around!!!

Thank-you everyone for your kind words & suggestions! We really appreciate your help. My friend & her husband lurk around here, but don't get on the internet much.

I am so glad there was such a good outcome and glad that the vet was willing to drive out to their place to help them.
