Goat experts - Doe not doing well - HELP

The doe with the teat injury. . .

Since yesterday evening, she was been off feed, seem to feel miserable -
last night she was standing with her mouth open a lot -

Not trembling, still walking around - though miserably -
hasn't been out to get into anything toxic
No injuries that I see. . .

No signs in the udder of mastitis.

We gave pen g, tetanus anti toxin, and thiamine. . . and probios.

Why?

Something about how she acts reminded me mildly of a buck we had dealing with either:

Tetanus, Listeriosis and Polio.

Likely one of the last two.

Now, I am not 100% on when she had her CDT - for some reason, I don't see it in my record book - my husband and I could swear she had it last summer, but since I can't find the record, I'm not sure.

ANY ideas?

If this is tetanus. . . what is the chance she could recover???

She seems to be able to see, isn't weaving. . .able to get up and down. . .

But something is quite wrong. . .

An extra C,D,& T shot is not going to hurt her at all. I would do the vaccine and the thiamine.

If she hasn't changed by morning, or if, at any point she gets worse, try the anti-biotic.

Enterotoxemia? Does this sound like it could be what is going on?

Well, so far, the symptoms that you have given me are:

1. Not eating.
2. In obvious discomfort, but not in a specific place.
3. Was standing with mouth hanging open.

With the only symptom that is rather specific, i.e., the mouth hanging open, I'd go with tetanus as a culprit. Second choice would be the Polio. Since neither C,D &T nor thiamine will cause harm if a goat is dosed with them and doesn't REALLY need them, it also seems to me to be the least risky start of treatment.

Sorry if I am not as sensible as I normally would be. My brain is not in high functioning mode right now.

If she shows no improvement by morning, and you cannot, for some reason, get her in the same room with a vet that knows something about goats, then start her on the anti-biotic. IF it is tetanus or polio, you would see some improvement by morning.

My vet would say about the same as me, as you and any other goat person -

"It could be Tetanus, Listeriosis, Polio or Enterotoxemia" - lol

We had already done two doses of Thiamine, Pen G, Anti toxin and tonight did Biomycin (incase it was Enterotoxemia) and she was eating a bit late tonight. . .

If your not sure she had her CD & T last summer, could it be clostridial perifrengens?
Sorry I don't really know what else it could be other than what was already listed.
Sure hope she pulls through for you. Do you have a good goat vet that could see her?

I have never experienced the symptoms you described; so I can be of no help with your goat. Therefore, I am just sending you some ((hugs)).

If it is tetnus or enterotoxemia a CD&T won't help. You will need C&D anti-toxin or Tetnus anti-toxin.

You could also give her a shot of Bo-Se, it's a good immunity booster. It doesn't sound like tetanus to me, there is a 'lot' of pain and the muscles go ridged pretty fast. Did you check her temperature?

She is fine - I continued with the Thiamine and antibiotic as my gut said it was Polio or Listeriosis - she improved back to normal by day three, but it lets me know I need to keep C&D anti-toxin on hand- - - I had and gave Tetnus anti-toxin, just in case, I was dealing with that.

Good call! Glad she made it. YOu don't deserve any more than what you've already been through. Oh, and kudos for being so attentive to your herd, dedicated, prepared, and frankly, well read on what it could be an how to treat, given its so hard to find a good Caprine vet.

Thank Goodness she's back to normal! You've sure had enough to deal with this year already & it's so tough when we loose one for what ever the reason.

I was afraid when it happened - like, "Well, it just isn't meant to be for this poor gal."
