Said Goodbye to Lacey Yesterday
We took Lacey to the vet to be put down yesterday afternoon. The vet was very busy, so she they put her in a huge cage in the livestock area of the vet office because it was going to be a while before the vet could get to her. I helped get her in the crate, took off her collar and gave her a pet and told her that we loved her. Then I had to walk away while she called to me. It was so heart breaking.
To anyone who thinks CAE is no big deal, it is. I don't care if 90 percent of goats that have it are never symptomatic, for the 10 percent that do develop symptoms, its very painful for them and heart breaking for the people who love them. Its even worse because CAE is so preventable. A simple, 4.00 test is all takes to save the next generation of goats and save their owners from the heart ache.
And for the newbies looking to get into goats. Don't buy any goats that don't have the tests to prove their health. Its not worth it. If they tell you they don't need tests because they have a closed herd, remember it doesn't help to close the barn doors after the wolves are already in there. If they don't test, they don't know, period.

I'm so sorry you had to go through that. It is heart breaking. I hope, because of your posts, a few more goats can be kept from getting it. It's really pretty easy to prevent. I know some people that got a goat that had it. She was pregnant at the time and towards the end of her pregnancy it got worse and worse to where she could no longer stand and just laid there and they had to take food and water to her because she couldn't walk at all. They ended up losing the mama and the babies. It was a hard thing for them.

I am so sorry. Thank you for being another voice about prevention and taking the steps to clean up the dairy goat industry.

{{{{Hugs}}}}. Yarrow is right - it was so much better for Lacey. She was so lucky to have been rescued by somebody who could take such good care of her and who loved her enough to do what was right - no matter how painful it was personally.

Thank you all, its nice to be able to tell people who won't think "its just a goat". Lacey will never be "just a goat".

At least she had a good home and love. Imagine what her life would have been like if you hadn't rescued her, that would have been the real tragedy.

I had to butcher two CAE positive does of my own. My first alpines, and I LOVED them. I still tear up every single darn time I think about them.
You did the right thing. Her passing is going to be painless, and she won't know any different.

You just strengthened my resolve. I had the opportunity to get some pygmys, free, from what was considered a "closed herd." I was tossing it about. You just reminded me...I have been through SO MUCH heartache with my goaties, why on earth take a chance that I would get one that would break my heart again, or even worse, give a disease to ones that mean so much to me. I can wait. I wanted you to kow that reading this put me back in time to holding my girl as she was put down, the heartache and tears; though it wasn't CAE, I will never know what it was, and it stunk. I still can't really discuss that day. Your story reminded me to keep my guard up and look past cute faces.
I am so sorry you lost your baby girl. They aren't "just a goat," they are pets and friends. ((hugs))

OBF, I can't tell you how sorry I am. I remember how thin and sad Lacey looked when you got her and how with love and good care she turned out to be just beautiful.
I'm thinking of you.

Obf- I am SO sorry you're going through this.
It sounds like you really did save Lacey- from a life of starvation and pain and then you released her the best way of all.
<<<hugs>>
