Bottle feeding schedule?
My bottle doeling is one month old today, and I have been taking her out on warm days to spend time with the adults. She is doing fine out there, unsupervised during the daytime, and we have been bringing her in a night to sleep in her cardboard "condo". I have been bottling her 3 times a day and she normally consumes 16 oz. a feeding. I have noticed her nibbling on hay and pellets. If I kept her out there full time, could I cut back to 2 times a day bottling at this point? I just dont want to head for the barn and bottle her at 10 every night. If I need to, I can keep her inside at night for a while longer.
Thanks in advance.

She should be fed three times a day for another month. Then you can go to twice a day feedings.

Wow, I feel bad. We had ours down to twice a day feedings by the time they were a couple weeks old or so. No one around a lot of times during the day to feed multiple times a day, so they move to twice a day pretty fast. Hasn't seemed to hurt them any. Hmmm.....

~smiles warmly~ What one manages to get away with and what is actually optimum are two different things. I was born in an old house in the late 60's. My room had old, lead-based paint on the wall. Did I manage to get away with it? Yes, because I wasn't a baby that wanted to lick the walls, I guess. Would I paint my granddaughter's nursery with lead-based paint? Not a chance in Hades.
But many fine, upstanding, intelligent people grew up in houses painted with lead-based paint!

I also looked on the Fiasco farm website. Their feeding schedule seems very hectic. My baby did not require near the feedings they recommend. I have noticed that they will let you know when they are hungry, but if she is in the barn and I am in the house, well, obviously I wont know she is ready for a feeding.

~sighs~ Alpines are my weakness.
I don't know what Fiasco Farms recommends for the first feeding schedule, but I go with about four per day to start with on a bottle baby.
If she stays inside, it doesn't matter what a schedule is, does it? She'll just let you know it is feeding time.

This is another reason she needs to go out. Here she is using our bed as a trampoline. The pic looks like she is resting her foot on the dresser, but the dresser is actually 5 feet from the bed. We caught her mid air!!The sweater is a gift from my DD. She said she just HAD to have a sweater. She has been a joy in the house, but the older she gets, the more she gets into.

Maybe.
We start out with about 4 times a day, then move to 3 times a day after a week or two and then I would say by the time they're a month old they're being fed twice a day. Been doing it that way for years, but what works for one person doesn't necessarily work for another.

That's the truth. They don't let you go too long without telling you they want a bottle.

~grinz~ Even my adult goats are not AT ALL shy about letting me know it is dinner time, and I should get my rump out to the barn and feed them. Then, maybe tuck them in and tell them a bedtime story. A GOOD bedtime story, with a happy ending. And scratch their ears while I am at it. and......

LOL I can't say anything. I give all my girls kisses and yep, I can hear mine from inside the house when it starts getting close to feeding time.

I start out feeding 4x per day - but as much as they want. Fiasco farm has you at 6x per day. That's often, and I find they never finish their bottles when I'm on that time frame. 4x per day and they often finish their bottles.

Hmmm.... I wonder if I'm over feeding Sam?
He's also an Alpine....almost 5 weeks old.
7:00am he gets 30oz.
Noon is 20oz.
4:00pm my daughter takes him 20oz after school.
8:30pm 25oz.
And he always acts starving!
He also has free choice hay, alfalfa pellets, & N-Timidator goat pellets.....
And BTW, that picture is so freaking cute!!!! If she gets to be too much trouble just send her my way
I miss Sam being in the house......but he kinda screwed up, made hubby mad and had to go outside

Fiasco is an awful rule of thumb for bottle feeding IMO.
Goats like to have smaller meals throughout the day, instead of heaping it all into one or two feedings. If you don't want to feed her at 10, feed her earlier, feedings don't have to be evenly spaced, just feed at a set time so they know to expect it - they love routine. My goats get 3 feedings a day from 2-4 weeks until weaning at 6-10 months. But everyone does it differently.
