Question help for first time doe, had quads.

My daughter's favorite doe finally delivered her bundle, to our surprise she had quads. She seemed to do okay until this morning she spiked a temperature (105) and seemed to be straining. I thought retained placenta, call my only vet for 40 miles and talked with him. He too thought the same and had me bring her to him. So he checked her out and did an internal and palpated her abdomen and he felt she had retained placenta. He is treating her with Banamine(for pain), oxytocin (for the uterus) and also a broad spectum antibotic. He gave me enough to treat her for the next couple of days. Is there anything elso I can do for her? We did unfortunately loose two of the babies due to the fact they were under-developed (one only 2lbs and the other 4lbs). I have two health babies (a buck 10lbs and doeling 8.5lbs) and we want to keep it like that. Any recs for supplemental feeding for them, just in case she looses her milk or anything worse? in the past I have used the purina formula....not thrilled with that product, looking for other options. Thanks

Congratulations on two healthy babies! If for some reason you need to supplement just use whole cow milk from the store.

Congratulations on the babies, what about pictures, we love baby pictures?

You could give her some electrolyte water to help perk her up, the homemade recipe is:
1 liter warm water
2 Tablespoons Honey or Sugar
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoonful salt
I always make that up for my girls after they kid & they drink it right up.

Hope your girls feeling better real soon.

Man, How in the world did she get quads, i dont see triplets much and that stinking goats had quads, But congradulations on the 2 that lived and what type of goat are they.

One thing You are going to want to make sure of is that she stays warm, her body is probly going crazy right now, so an infection, cold, virus,or like worms could be serius. Also make sure she is eating normal amount of food.

Wait! I can use regular milk for baby goats? I have a $60 bag of milk replacer and I didn't have to buy it?

Does this also work for lambs?

This is good info!

Congrats on your babies! I hope the doe gets feeling better!

Yes, we use regular store bought cow milk for feeding our kids if we don't have raw goat milk available. We've had milk replacer cause severe diarrhea in the past, so shy away from it and haven't had any problems since.

This morning Suzy is doing so much better. She is much more perkier and was giving kisses and standing up on her door. She is eating, I have gone to free choice with her grain and hay. I will until she gets back on her feet. Last night, I gave her a small amount of warm moist beet pulp with molasses which she nibbled on then went back to her regular feed and munched on her hay. She prefers her hay.

Her roommate just kidded, and I returned them back together. Suzy is happier and they share kid care & clean each other. First time, I saw this happen, it is amazing to watch. These two have been best friends for a very long time.

Thanks for the suggestion for using whole milk for babies...I remember how badly my bottle babies scoured on the Purina milk replacer. It was so harsh on their system. I had a regular supply of g2 in the house. In fact, Suzy was one of the bottle babies and readily drinks gatorade... there isn't a safe bottle in the barn.

Katie- I am going to try giving her some of your homemade recipe. Both girls will get some. Thanks for sharing.

P.S. I have pictures...I will post them later today.

PLEASE don't give her free-choice grain! Hay, yes, and alfalfa pellets too, but not grain. Give her the usual amount she's used to and slowly, increase it for her to keep up with her production.
Has she been dewormed since she kidded?

Kim - I had on heron free choice because she really wasn't eating, but now that her roomate is back in with her and she is eating... she is back to what she was getting just before she had her babies with just slightly more alfalfa pellets. She has free choice hay. I plan to just slowly increase her food. I haven't dewormed her as of yet, with how sick she was I want to wait a day or two until she finishs her course of meds from the vet.

Yes. No. Yes.

I don't even like using milk replacer on calves if there is any way I can avoid it. Milk replacer kills babies, that is just a fact.

Use store-bought whole milk, or your own goat's milk.
