An OY and a VAY- as our day implodes around us

This morning, get up to feed. Cupcake, our propane tank, is not due until the 12th. Has had a UTI and has been on penicillin. Was doing great. First thing I see is a large water bag hanging out. She is unconcerned and chows her grain and hay. My daughter helped me scrub up and I went in. She's not dilated, I can only get one or two fingers in, and I can feel a TINY jaw, and this would only be day 136. Call the vet...yep, induce. She gets 8 cc dexamethasone and 1 cc lutalyse...she'll start to kid mid afternoon; kids probably dead or VERY unlikely to make it...problem? Well, at that time, we are supposed to be at our first annual Ag Expo where my daughter is in charge of the 4-H booth, AND interviewing Joel Salatin for her science fair project on internal parasite prevention. I glance to the next pen...the saanen, also due on the 12th, is looking depressed. Yesterday she was stiff legged and seemed off and we gave her 50 cc MFO. She perked up. Today she looks bad again. So we gave her 80 cc of MFO this morning and the effect was immediate...up and perky and eating. We'll have to really watch her for the next two weeks. Then...I glance to the market wether pen. The biggest, burliest boy is scouring. Too much grain? Cocci? God only knows, but over to him to give albon AND pepto. We are now hosing ourselves off and getting dressed for the Ag Expo. Husband will check the goat hourly and tell us if she is down and pushing at which point we'll race home. I am so bummed about this pregnancy but pragmatic. We'll milk her and use the milk for my daughter's new nubian kids.

What a terrible way to start the day for sure. Hope your daughter enjoyed herself some anyways at the AG expo, I'm sure your mind was else where most of the time!

So how is everyone doing tonight, I sure hope you have good news for us!

No progress on momma propane tank tonight. There is still just a bag of water hanging. IF she doesn't have anything before morning, I am instructed by the vet to go in again and see if she's dilated any more. If not then she gets more dex. She is unconcerned, looking for the bucket of grain, eating hay well. She is my daughter's pet and I just want her to come through this ok. The saanen is weird; I'm not sure how I'm screwing up the nutrition part. She's getting free choice alfalfa and a cup of grain a.m and p.m. As soon as I give her the MFO she is markedly better. Is there anyway to pull her out of this or does she need MFO every day? With it being only 14 days away I don't MIND giving her a maintenance dose but would rather "fix" what I'm doing wrong. The wethers? Crap shoot, pardon the pun. I don't know if its cocci or not, but they are due starting tomorrow for their trhee week cocci prevention meds so we started everyone on it today.

First, the doe with the bubble - when we had a doe go early (she cast herself in a shelter a week prior) - just one little foot was out, but no dilation at all - our vet also had us give her lutelyse. That should help open her up.

BTW, ours were 2 weeks premie and we saved them both.

Your Saanen - what kind of grain are you feeding?

And yes, you will probably have to do this until she kids. Just be very grateful she is still eating and drinking on her own. And that she is up on her feet.

She may be carrying big triplets or possibly quads, which would mean that this is case specific and not management.

We had two Boers get a little "winky" this January. Noticed they looked and felt a bit skinny when we were giving their Bo-Se and CDT shot at 2 weeks out, so moved them to a pen for some extra TLC an no competition. They are kind of toward the bottom of the pecking order. Was prepared to start the MFO/gatorade drench but they didn't end up needing it. Turns out they both kidded with quads. No wonder!

That's about the same thing I was thinking.

Still nothing; the water bag broke at some point last night and this morning everything was back inside. I gave her another 8 cc of dexamethasone and we have nuflor on hand but if nothing is going on by noon, I'm having the vet out on an emergency call. She is up, eating, drinking, scarfing grain. If you didn't see her yesterday you wouldn't even know she'd been prolapsing. I've never had this situation...holy buckets.
