ear tag???

I just got my DD a boer goat for her 4-H market goat project. He does not have an ear tag. What do I have to do to get him a ear tag? He needs it for her to show, does anyone know? OHhhhh and I will post pics of the cutie, she named him "Scream". I do hope I didn't make a mistake, I didn't know he had to have an ear tag.

The number for info on the scrapies tag program is 866-USDA-TAG. If it hasn't changed, he just asked about how many goats we have, what breed, what use. He assigned a number and sent us 100 tags and an applicator. It was fairly painless and I've never heard anything from them in 12 years.

Hopefully they won't send you those BIG plastic tags. If they give you a choice ask for the skinny metal one's that alot of folks use for goats around here.

I bought a nubian baby with one of those big plastic tags last year & her ear kept getting all crusty & yucky around the hole where the tag was. I was putting TriCare on it & everything & it just wouldn't clear up, I think air couldn't get in there was part of the problem.
I cut the tag out of her ear & it cleared up in a few days. She no longer has a tag.

You might also talk to your local 4H leader and find out. Some states and counties require you to 'nominate' market animals and will tag them at the nominations.
