update on straining doe-not labor, found out what!

I posted last week that we had a doe who was continually straining as if she wanted to kid and prolapsing a tiny bit; you know how they start squatting like they have to pee but no pee comes out? Well, after I realized she wasn't kidding, I started suspecting a urinary tract infection. I remember when I had one, and how I constantly felt like I had to pee and just how BADLY it hurt! Well, when she would lie down, she would grunt and strain too. So we got a sterile, new canning jar and collected a tiny bit of urine, since every time she pees, very little comes out. The culture came back today and the vet said the bacterial count sky-high for a single strain type of streptococcus, sure sign of an infection. Poor thing, she's bigger than our propane tank, isn't due until March 11th, and has little buggers tap-dancing on her bladder. So she's on a big double dose of Pen-G tonight and then a single dose/daily for the next 7 days. We'll know by Saturday if its working as she should stop the straining if the infection is causing the straining. Wish us luck!

ditto what Sharmom said. Would cranberry juice help her? Or rasberry tea?

I hated bladder infections! I used to get them when I was younger. Then I learned to love cranberry juice! Can a goat take AZO standard? It helps the symptoms. In humans that is.

Thank Goodness you found out what was going on with her! Keeping my fingers crossed the antibiotics work & she's fine by Saturday! Poor thing heavy with kids & a bladder infection on top of it, she must be uncomfortable!

The really good news is that she has been her usual piggy self during all this; I was really paranoid that she would stop eating and then all heck would break lose. I really think there are quads in there. I am also hoping she bred on a silent heat one cycle earlier than March 11...that would allow her to kid next week...but I don't think thats going to happen.

i had a ff this summer that did that, and i thought she looked like she was trying to kid, and no way, wrong time?! i didn't know what to do, then someone said how that was what they look like if they have bladder infect. i didn't realize goats could get that, but i gave her a treatment just like you are and within 2 days she was tons better! sorry your poor preggers had to do it tho., ouch!

Watch her for premature labor. A uti will cause preterm labor. It sent me to the hospital with my twins. I get uti's all the time I have had 3 in the last 4 months. I feel for the poor girl. Im glad you were smart enough to figure that out. Encourage lots of fluid consumption. Find a way to make her pee more acidic like with pine or something natural.
Good luck with her keep us posted on how she is. BTW will pen g get rid of a uti. We always use microbid or keflex type antibiotic which is in the class of oxitetricycline (sp)

Just thought you'd like to know - a friend of mine had a goat with the same symptoms and I remembered that I had read this thread, and passed it on to her. She was terrified that the goat was going into premature labour, and now has her on penicillin, and the goat is doing much better!
