Vet suggests too low a dose??

A fellow goat pal has a 2 yr doe with what sounds like pneumonia ( mucus, raspy, coughing, lethargic-off feed).

Vet, who is iffy on goat knowledge; suggested 3 ml Penn G Procaine 2x daily.

I suggested we find out a body temperature first (!) and give banamine if there's a high-end normal to fevered temp, AND a bigger dose of Pen G-P than 3 ml, 2x daily for a very sick, ~150 lb lamanca doe.

3ml sounds way too small... Even www.fiascofarm.com suggests 1ml per every 15lb body weight!

What do you think? I've not had to treat for pneumonia so I'm open for suggestions. The fellow goat pal does not have a fully stocked med chest ( grrrr) and is squeamish about even taking rectal temp (GRRRRRR)... I keep working on him to be more pro active -hand s on!!!!

She's going to hold the thermometer under their tongues? ROFLMAO

3 cc per 50 pounds is what I have on my dose chart.

You should also suggest giving probiotics. You have to be careful using antibiotics on ruminants because of the possibility of acidosis. And, obviously, you inject, not give PO.

I did suggest probiotics and vit b complex since the doe is going down and could probably use thiamine and something to boost her appetite too.

Thanks Mekasmom for thinking probiotics-I swear by them! Ms Alice for the affirmation that 3ml 2x daily sounded nutz.

And really(pnuemonia being NOTHING to play around with), you need to use something stronger than penG. Nuflor being the drug of choice here if facing pnuemonia. Nuflor at 6 ccs per hundred lbs for three days in a row, banamine for inflammation and to prevent scarring of the lungs.

Never sit on possible pneumonia!!!!! Exactly! ...but that's exactly what happened to this family's sick doe...I suspect she's had scarred lungs since she was young...they called me back then about her wheezing- but they liked the vets answer that the goat probably just had allergies... AARRGGHH. I called last night and could only leave a message. I called back today and they said the goat died overnight. I just love these folks and they are such good parents to two autistic children... but I know to really push them to react faster for their animals. They are so timid of hands-on medical care...they can milk the does just fine but they balk at taking rectal temps and injections...not feeling comfortable with that well....THAT"S HOW YOU'LL LOSE ANIMALS!

Thanks for affirming my suspicions that PenG Pro was dosed too low or not strong enough. I offered banamine too but they didn't come get it. Vet didn't mention it at all. I like the Vet too...but he's missed quit a few challenges on goats and my senior dog.... At least he asks me what I want and if it's not a barbituate or epinephrine( like I want to make meth) he lets me buy it off of him.

PenG won't cure pneumonia, she needs Nuflor.
