Stillborn kid...no afterbirth

I'm sure this information has been posted, but I'm in no shape to search for it. I had a first time freshener kid this morning. Kid was fully developed, but had a shoulder presentation. I couldn't get it turned and I heard the little neck break as it was born. Mom is a small nigerian dwarf. I haven't seen afterbirth yet and it's been over an hour. I'm a total nervous wreck. Anything I should do or give her?

Milk her out and freeze the colostrum. Milking will stimulate her Oxytocin production and help her uterus to contract and expel the placenta. One hour isn't bad. She should pass it soon but get her milked out now. Sorry for the loss of the kid.

An hour isn't that long. Give her a few hours. Some vets say up to 12 hrs, but that's not ideal... usually a sign of copper/selenium deficiencies if it takes that long.

Are you sure that's the only kid?

There is no milk. I just went out to try and milk her. The teats have no tension at all....very soft and floppy. The udder is quite small and doesn't feel like it has any milk either. Still no afterbirth.

I'm fairly certain that is the only kid. I contacted the person that I bought the goats from and he told me about the bounce test. I'm not feeling any other kids. She hasn't acted like she is in labor since the 1 was born.

Has she been tested for CAE? How much mammary development is there? I recently had a ff kid with hardly an udder. Within a week her udder is very nice and miking well.
Is there anything hanging out of her at all? I guess if it were me, I'd get some Oxytocin from the vet (and ask his opinion) and wait for a few more hours to see what she does. Then after about 5 hours, I'd hit her up while the cervix is still open.

Called the vet.....they are about to go to lunch and will be back at 1pm. He said he has oxytocin and I'll go get some at that time and ask him at what point he recommends giving it to her.

I had planned on being more prepared than this, but none of my 3 were supposed to kid until next month!

At least I have mostly quit shaking. I'm rather glad she didn't have twins. I think if I'd had to go through that twice that someone would have found me laid out in the goat pen. Makes things much much more difficult when you have a stress disorder.

well, shoot.

I'm sorry you lost the kid.

Great idea to get the oxy, to keep milking, and to b-r-e-a-t-h-e. Think happy thoughts. You're doing fine, but dang it, that's just a lousy thing for your FF and you to deal with.

{hug}

Are you sure it was full term? No udder and she was able to pass the kid shoulder first sounds like a premie.
We had one doe abort at 139 days this year. The kid was fully developed (externally) and even covered in hair, but would not have survived. We also had a set of twins aborted at three weeks out. They didn't have their full hair cover yet, but were basically developed externally beyond that.
With you not expecting kids until next month, it sounds suspicious. Aborting will also cause the placenta to be slow to pass.
I'm sorry you lost the kid. It is never fun.

I was thinking the same thing as Roseanna. I'd still get the oxytocin from the vet & ask him how long to wait before giving it to her.
So sorry for your loss, it is awfully hard when stuff like that happens.

The baby looked really good except dead....I'm fairly sure it was full term. My other 2 goats are giving signs of getting close to kidding also. I bought them already bred, so I don't have first hand knowledge of what date they were bred on.

Went to the vet and got the oxytocin. He said to go ahead and give her 1cc. I gave her 1 cc at 2pm....still no afterbirth. I'm to give her another cc in about 30 mins and another in 2.5 hours. After that he says to bring her in tomorrow.

She is up and about. Not at all lively, but not down either. Kind of stunned I think. This is a lot for her to go through in one day. I'm going over to the neighbors for some coffee and a sympathetic shoulder.

Well there is a bit of good news. She is producing milk now. I milked out what was there. Still hasn't passed afterbirth.

She needs a shave really really badly. Definately going to get my other 2 up tomorrow and shave them. I hate being so ill prepared for this.

This is probably a silly question. I don't have a milk stand. My van is in the shop and all I have to drive at the moment is the motorcycle, so I'm not going to be able to make a trip to the lumber store for materials. What I do have is a dog grooming table. My thought is if I stack up hay bales she might be able to get up onto it by herself. If not, it's not like she is a large goat. I could lift her up. There is a metal arm that mounts to one side. Have to use a bit of ingenuity to rig something, but I think it may work. What do y'all think?

if you offer her as much grain as she wants at head level on that stand then it could work for you. She will probably kick, as a first freshener so that may be the main problem even with the grain.

If she stands still on it, I don't see why not :-) Just set her up with food and make sure she doesn't fall off :-)

Goodness TxMex. Sounds like you have had a day full. Hoe thigs straighten out ok. Maybe you need to take a B12 for the stress for you. I know 2 people who take the B12 due to stress disorders as well as Cod Liver.
