waited too late?

So I went and got one of the little bucklings this morning to get ready to disbud, and the (unplugged) disbudder wont fit over the little horns. they are two weeks old, i guess i waited too long! i have a reinhart x30. i guess i should have done it last weekend. I guess i'll have a wether with horns, and who knows if ill be able to sell the other one if he has horns?!

My guy does it at a week old. Says it is easier on them, just as hard on me no matter when it happens, lol.

Before I found him I ended up with a couple of kids with horns, I sold them for less because of it. So yes people will buy them but not for the same price as disbudded, at least not in my area. I sell purebed Nigie wethers for $75 each and those boys I sold for $40 each just to move them along. I do not need a ton of weeding eating pets

I sold all Nubian my kids with horns last year and had no problems finding buyers. Of course, I sold them unregistered at a lower price so that might have made a difference. I had someone drive from 100 miles away so there is a market in N Fla/S Ga, I think, even for horned goats.

I have a horned wether and he is pretty good about not using his horns to bully the others who are all dehorned. I super glued little tennis balls to the end of his horns and he looks like an alien. It takes him a few weeks to rub the balls off so I have to glue them back on but not a problem.

Do you mean the horn is too long? Clip it with shears then disbud.

Can also make a sleeve out of copper tubing that will get heat to right place.
We have done kids a month old with no problems or scurs

Never had one bleed, but if you cut on the tip of the bud, it might. When you cauterize it with the iron, any bleeding will stop.

Wouldn't think two weeks would be too old to disbud. The horn bud doesn't have to fit into the hole. Do you have someone locally who can come and show you how to do it?

you can sort of roll it around the outside of the horn if you need to, rather than pressing straight down.

That is what I do. Clip with clean shears, cauterize because it will bleed, then disbudd as usual.

I've had them done that late. The lady basically burned it in half and moved the iron around a few times. Worked fine.

Thanks for the advice guys! We decided to not disbud these boys. Id rather have beautiful horns than chance ugly scurs, especially since i dont know what im doing. Next year we will try again, hopefully i'll get to learn from someone by then. I know there are going to be folks who think I should have, Im sorry, but this is what hubby and I feel comfortable with. My buck has horns, and one of these guys will be his wether companion. Hopefully I'll be able to find a good home for the other one.
