coccidia prevention

Do you use preventative for coccidia only on bottle fed babies or all babies?

steff, you use the molly herbals for cocci prevention?

I was just going to ask when I start giving prevention, last year we got babies at 2 weeks old and they got it, so wanted to know does everyone treat all their does all year long, or just in spring?

I notice on the bag of Noble goat it says feed for 28 days. SOme of this stuff really gets confusing to keep it all straight

All kids. Cocci is such a problem here in this humidity that you have to be very scheduled for the prevention. It is amazing the difference in their growth when it is prevented.

I do not use coccidia prevention on my kids. I treat only if symptomatic. Why? I want them to develop a natural resistance to coccidia. I also do not keep kids in a small area where they can be constantly reinfected with a heavy load of coccidia. I feel like a constant light load is better for their long-term health even if it slows growth a little. I have seen cases where adult animals have succumbed to coccidiosis because they were exposed to a strain that was resistant to the coccidiastat in their diet.

When using the Corid powder, do you mix as directed for cattle?

We dose all our kids, with the dam-raised being a pain in the patoot to catch. It was/is my understanding that the prevention protocol HELPS them until they are big enough to have a natural immunity to it. Otherwise, even the subclinical infections can cause damage to the intestinal tract and they'll be behind nutritionally for the rest of their lives...am I mistaken? We use 12 1/2% dimethox
ne prairiemama likes this.

The thing with the powder is that its a higher concentration, think its a 20%. Which seems like the dosage would be different than the liquid.

I use Corid since it's supposed to kill the damaging stage of coccidiosis but not the younger benign stage, so builds resistance that way. I use the liquid Corid and it is used full strength 6.25cc per 25 lbs. Unless fecals are done I wouldn't trust anything but chemical. Worms don't lay eggs much if at all in the winter so a fecal could be clean making one think herbs are working.

I have used Corid. It gags them pretty bad. I thought about trying the Dimethox to have less gagging but I am still working on my gallon jug of Corid.

I lost one of my first does to cocci damage, Goldie(small size and after giving birth could not process enough food for calcium intake- her 2 doelings grew up to be twice her size).

We don't use a coccidiosis prevention program for kids or adults and we just don't have a problem with it. Our vet told us years ago that he'd seen enough end stage liver failure in goats from breeders giving sulfa drugs to last him a life time.

Southern Idaho is a whole different world from the world of humidity.
