Figs

I'm having a hard time finding info on whether or not figs are poisonous to goats. There's a big fig tree in the new fenced area, is it safe for the goats?

We have a Kadota Fig Tree and the goats managed to eat a few of its leaves, which did not hurt them. After they hardened I pruned it heavily, throwing the limbs (with attached unripened figs) outside the fenced area where it is located. Before I realized it, our goats were chowing down on them, green figs and all. I could hear them crunch. That was months ago and it didn't affect them negatively at all that I could tell.

My goats won't touch my LSU Purple fig tree. I'm guessing it was bred to taste bad. Goats generally are pretty good about not eating more than they can handle of any plant as long as they have other options.

If they were poisonous, my goats would have been sick a long time ago. We have a small fig orchard and if fact, we picked figs to start with because the Co-op mentioned they could be eaten to the ground by our goats and still come back. And they were right! We have Brown Turkeys.

I have a "Celeste" from Isons. It hasn't arrived as yet; but I'm now wondering if that particular fig tree will be toxic to goats. Anyone know?

The goats will love them whether you want them to or not! That is the other variety we have. Couldn't remember yesterday when I replied.
