Unhappy Our Baby Willy died this morning

Hi everyone!

I just needed to share our sad news with all of you since you had all been such a HUGE help and blessing to us over the past week. I'm so sad, frustrated and confused. He was doing soooo well! He was eating like a champ. But, in all honesty, only gained one pound in a week. But, I just figured he was just getting a slow start. Yesterday, he was up and walking around but he wouldn't really eat very much. He sounded congested when he breathed, so I wondered if he had a cold. I watched him throughout the day and he acted normal, he just wouldn't eat!

I tried to get him to take his 11 pm feeding and he only took about an ounce. I stayed up until 1:30 trying to get him to eat, but he just wouldn't. By the time I went to bed, I determined I was going to take him to the vet this morning if he made it that long. I just had a sick feeling about him! At 7 am, I was relieved to see him still alive. I tried to feed him and again, he just didn't take it. So, I got out the syringe and started feeding him that way. He actually started drinking and took several syringes-full, but then started letting it all drain out of his mouth. So, I went to the barn to check on our newest babies. When I came back, he cried out as soon as he heard my voice. I got sooo excited and went to him right away. I gave him about 1/2 cc of milk and he let it drain out, and immediately I could telll we were losing him. Within a few minutes he took his last breath and his heart stopped beating. I just don't know what happened!!! My one concern is the milk. I opened a new gallon of goat milk yesterday and that's when he started not eating well. I'm wondering if something was wrong with it. But, it didn't smell bad! So, I don't know.

I'm looking for answers when maybe the only answer is that he just wasn't strong enough to survive. We're gonna miss our little guy. He already had everyone in love with him.

Thank you all again for everything. I wish our outcome had been different!

Sometimes there just isn't anything you can do. You did everything you could and tried hard to help him. He had love and comfort.

I'm so sorry you lost him. Oat Bucket is right. Sometimes no matter what you do, you just lose them anyway. It is frustrating and you may never know why. It's just one of those things.

Sorry you lost him. With the congestion you describe, he probably had pneumonia. Whenever I have a baby goat go off feed and sound congested, I treat with either Nuflor or Tylan 50. I also give 1/10cc of Banamine.

Thank you all so much for your support and encouragment. It really is a bummer, I have to say.

Goatkid: I wondered about pneumonia, actually. Where do you get the Nuflor or Tylan 50? Are they prescription?

I'm so sorry. Losing animals is part of farming/homesteading/pet ownership but it is never easy. He was a cute little guy. You did the best you could, sometimes it just isn't meant to be.

Nuflor and Banamine are RX and you need to get them from your vet. My vet sells me bottles of meds to keep on hand. Tylan 50 can be bought at some feed stores. I got mine at Walco in Great Falls, MT.

I'm sorry about your little guy. Before I had my back surgery we had a little doe that never gained weight. Her momma wouldn't feed her, so I bottle fed her, but she just never grew. Other than lack of growing, she seemed strong and healthy, but one day DH went out, I think she was 6 months old at the time, and he found her dead in their pen. That was when I sold our first little herd. I had just had the surgery when she died and my heart just went out of it for awhile. Thankfully, we now have our new little herd and our new baby is growing great and has a great momma.
